Health team sent to help villagers frightened by ‘deadly ghost’

Public health officials, including a doctor and psychologists, have been dispatched to a tambon in Nong Kung Si district in Kalasin province following rumours that a “porb” ghost has killed four men recently.

The rumours prompted the action by Kalasin chief public health officer, Dr Prawit Sriboonrat, to try to pacify the frightened villagers.

But the move was apparently a little late, as the villagers in Moo 3, Moo 8 and Moo 11 villages of Tambon Nong Suang had already taken their own action by hiring a “hermit” to perform a superstitious rite to chase away the ghost.

The villagers believe the ghost has eaten the internal organs of the four men, causing them to die.

Prasit Singhamat, head of Moo 3 village, said the rite calmed the villagers and they appeared to have stopped worrying. Most of them returned from the rite with smiles on their faces.

Regardless of this, the head of the public health team, Dr Pairat Songkhram, who is a preventive medicine specialist, said officials would continue to look into the scientific causes of the deaths, and psychologists would interview the families of the four men.

Pairat said he has instructed team members to avoid saying anything that would ridicule or belittle the villagers’ beliefs.

I guess an autopsy will clear up that mess.

Yet they want hi- speed trains, nuclear power, the World Cup...

Maybe arrive in the 21st century first, where the majority of the population does not believe in Santa Claus and the tooth- fairy!

(Yes...I said "majority", which is the big difference to my western home-country, which is "Christian" by definition, but only a hand full actually believe spiritual mumbo- jumbo!)

Unfortunately I think the majority of the human race does believe in gods, demons, ghosts and all the other superstitious nonsense.

Exactly what they believe in our little village. But what about liver cancer (paalaah, lao khao etc)...

To much LaoKhao.

God Bless

Its just a big time warp fuelled by Lao Khan , 2000 yrs ago that was the UK

Maybe the General will send reinforcements

Live and Let Live so long as the "Ghosties" leave me alone I am very OK

No doubt the ghost, embodied in the form of Pla-la liver flukes did these boys in.

The only thing that needs an autopsy are the brains of these medieval morons.

Well it may sound mumbo jumbo backward yet the supposedly most sophisticated advanced nation in the world has the words 'In God we Trust' written on their holy dollar.

If the autopsy finds they have no brain, no heart, no spine and the head can be interchanged with the ass then we have found the missing USA presidential candidates.

I think that comment is a bit unfair.   These are village people, possibly never had a good education, and no doubt poor access to modern medicine.

Look at London a century or more ago.  No one had any idea that their village pump was killing so many.

The Government has done the right thing bringing in a team of experts.

Yup, 'religion' has a lot to answer for :coffee1:

'In God we Trust' - everyone else pays cash.

I do hope the health inspectors heal the ghost. And then watch the locals freak out.

It's funny - was playing a very basic game of hide and seek with my missus' nephew in a department store when some older Thai guy came up to me. He told me it's not a good idea to play hide and seek as it can attract ghosts. I think he wanted to show off his English but also just show off in general. I just looked at him and said, "That's stupid".

He walked off looking dumbfounded and for a second I felt a bit bad. But then you realise that you shouldn't go up to strangers and tell them stupid and insane information. You wanna believe in ghosts - go nuts. But know that it's your belief that it defies the laws of science. Also, stop being so arrogant thinking that a ghost would have any interest in you even if they did exist.

OMG.  Thai 4.0 isn't going to happen, except in the dreams of some 'leaders'.

I think they would be better employed by interviewing the villagers of Moo 3, 8 and 11!

"Most of them returned from the rite with smiles on their faces."

No comment necessary - "Say no more"!

lau kau more likely

Thanks to the superb Thai educational system to bring up generations of stupids!

God save us from arrogant pricks who think they know everything . You think its fine to laugh at innocent villagers believing in ghosts when you yourself have no idea whatsoever if ghosts exist or not . They could just as easily laugh at you for being so sure they dont exist .

Where do you find a "Hermit",when you need one ?

No. There are no such things as ghosts. If people wanna believe that then go nuts. But don’t preach that nonsense to others.

It’s 2017.

Excuse me, Christmas would not be the same without Jacob Marley and his chain

Science can prove they don’t exist. Of course they don’t exist. Just because you can’t definitively prove something doesn’t exist, doesn’t make it a 50/50 chance.

The problem with spirituality and ‘beliefs’ is it stops you from understanding the real world. That can be detrimental to your own health. But more importantly, it can be detrimental to others.
