Traffic gridlock expected during university commencements next week

By The Nation

Traffic police have warned motorists to be prepared for gridlock on seven main Bangkok roads as two universities hold their commencements next weeks.

Congestion is expected starting this week as Kasetsart University and Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RUTT) hold dress rehearsals.

Kasetsart announced that its commencements would be held from next Monday to November 24 with rehearsals held this week from Monday to Friday.

The university said 15,077 graduates would attend the commencement, or about 3,000 per day, in addition to relatives and friends.

Traffic congestion was expected on Vibhavadi-Rangsit, Phaholyothin, Ngam Wong Wan, Kaset-Navamin, Chaeng Wattana and Ram Indra roads.

The RUTT announced that it would also hold commencements during the same period with rehearsals from Wednesday to Sunday.

It said 28,564 graduates would attend the ceremonies, or about 6,000 graduates a day, in addition to friends and relatives.

The ceremonies are expected to cause traffic congestion on Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road.

Pol Maj-General Jiraphat Phumichit, deputy metropolitan police commissioner, said he had been assigned to take over traffic operations during the ceremonies.

He said traffic policemen had been deployed on the roads and around Kasetsart to direct traffic flow to minimise congestion.
