The acting head of the metropolitan police announced yesterday that a Vietnamese woman held hostage since Monday has been rescued.

One of the men who abducted her has been arrested by Chana Songkhram police in Bang Rak. He is Vietnamese national Rei Duk Lok, 24, a fruit seller.

Chanthep Sisawech said that Lok conspired with another Vietnamese man called Phuk, 19, to abduct Na, 32.

The victim was bound and gagged and taken to a location for 4 or five hours on Monday. She was then transferred to a hotel room in the Theparak area of south eastern Bangkok.

Police found her hands and feet still bound yesterday.

She said she had had no food and had to urinate on the floor. She thought she was going to die and thanked the police for saving her in time.

Earlier a one million baht ransom demand had been made to Na's husband Daeng. Police managed to trace the victim after the gang arranged for a 10,000 baht down payment to be transferred to a bank account that was then accessed at an ATM by a motorcycle taxi rider hired for the purpose.

The gang had threatened relatives of the victim that if their demands were not met she would be killed and thrown in the canal on Rama VIII road. They rejected an attempt by the husband to bargain down the ransom to 300,000 baht.

The abduction is believed to have stemmed from the fact that Lok was reported to the authorities for working illegally several months ago, reported Independent News Network.
