Nigel Richards (NZ) about to square off against Gerry Carter (Thailand) in the Princess Cup international Scrabble tournament qualifying.

Nigel Richards - the best Scrabble player in the world from New Zealand - easily won the Princess Cup international Scrabble tournament in Bangkok at the weekend.

Playing on a giant board in front of shoppers at the south eastern Bangkok Central Bang Na shopping center the phenomenon beat Thai Sinatan Pattanasuwanna in the final.

Nigel's winning board against Gerry. Nigel played CASERNE, IGNAROES and FOETIDLY.

Nigel started the best of three match with ZEROING for 104 points and never looked back.

Nigel, who lives in Kuala Lumpur, has been hailed as the greatest player of the word game that has ever lived. The game was invented by Alfred Butts in the USA in the middle of the last century and is played seriously in tournaments around the world.

It received Royal Family patronage in Thailand and the sponsorship of big business.

In the International Youth division two Pakistani players made the final. Taking the US 3,000 dollat top prize was teen Hammad Hadi Khan who beat Moiz Ullah Baig to the title.

A strong Thai contingent played in both the professional and youth events but was ultimately unable to match the visitors.

Bangkok resident and Thai representative Gerry Carter said: "Nigel showed his brilliance once again - it was fascinating how he managed to play with a rack with no vowels to limit his opponent's options in game two of the final.

"The tournament was also a great success for the Pakistani youth. Their Scrabble scene is now more than a match for Thailand's especially among youth players".

Thousands of Thai schoolchildren crowded the aisles and event hall of the shopping center on Saturday and Sunday playing Scrabble and other games such as Sudoku, A-Math (a math equations game) and English language quizzes.

The event was organised by the Thailand Crossword Game Association.

" IGNARO (pl IGNAROES )".......the reason why I'm not good at scrabble.

Actually there is many online scrabble dictionary, gives you every possible word for what letters you have.

Im sure these guys (especially the Thais) would use the websites to find those strange words.

From then the only real skill is a good memory for all those weird words and recall when the tiles come up
