Video: Thais tricked by "farang" roadside con man

A video showed a Thai driver being conned of 100 baht by a foreign man with a tall tale.

A man on a motorcycle bangs on the window of a car parked by the side of the road and spins a tale about having the seat on his bike prised open and losing money.

He mumbles something in Thai about going to the Turkish Embassy.

He asked for 60 baht and the driver, feeling sorry for him, opens his wallet to give him 100 baht, half the money he has.

The foreigner grabs the cash and races off into the distance.

The driver grumbles that he didn't even say thank you, probably realizing by now that he has been conned.

Netizens commenting online said that the same guy with the same story was doing this all the time.

He was preying on the good nature - and gullibility - of the Thai public.

He looks in forlornly and if the victim doesn't open the window, he bangs on it to tell his tale, they said.

The video was posted on Facebook by "Orchun Maurer" and reported by Thai Rath.

This massive scam could shake the tourist industry and cause major repercussions in the police department.

I hope the Thai man recovers from the loss of all that money.

Yeah, Thanks for that mate. Your low life behaviour now has another million or so Thais thinking that all farang are scum like you, and all for the sake of a lousy 100 baht. Go home you cheap turd.

How long should this 'farang' spend in prison? I'm thinking 5 years at least. No chance at parole.

You just don't do sarcasm and irony do you? That's just weird in this day and age.

Thank you. What point did I miss?

Geez, you're good, you did it again.  Try reading post #17 again but here's a clue anyway, "My point was your missing the point...".

No, I didn't, hence the "(deliberately)" part but I'm not entirely sure that he was being sarcastic.

This prat knocked on my window near Siam Paragon peddling this story in broken Thai last year. I told him I don’t speak Thai at which point he tried to tell me the story in English, to which I “politely” told him to leave the area before certain limbs would strike him causing possible injury to him.

He tried to go to another car further up but sped off when a cop came out of the police box.

An opportunity for making merit...so money not wasted.

BTW...I often give money to beggars on the Soi.....about 5% say "thank you" or a bow of the head.
