A 27 year old Ukrainian tourist disappeared after swimming off Patong Beach last evening (December 10).

A team of Patong lifeguards along with the Kulsoldham Phuket Foundation volunteers combed the beach area following a report that a tourist had gone missing at about 6.30pm (sunset last night was at 6.09pm). A boat driver, who is a witness, says that he saw the tourist swimming but the man was swimming away from the boat which was about 300-400 metres offshore, with a water depth of 7-8 metres.

a wave is as high as deep, with 8 meter depth it means really big waves.

Bad visibility does not stop a trained rescue diver.

Put a pole is the sand, tie your rope on this pole and circle around in extending circles.

One arm stretched out in front of you with a fist waving from left to right to find out what is in front of you.

But on the other hand, the last story of Phuket rescue service was a 2 day training and now they are well prepared for their jobs.

What a strange post.

He went missing in the ocean, not a silted up pond.

There hasn't been any waves as you describe, in Patong Bay since the tsunami. It's been like a mill pond lately.

I think his disappearance would have something to do with his reported drunkenness or perhaps being run over by a boat.

From the link:

"a boat driver who saw Mr Ryboichuck in the sea, and he said that while he was on the boat about 300-400 metres from the shore he saw Mr Ryboichuck was swimming. However, when the boat went near him he disappeared."

The above post is the exact reason the abbreviation "W T #" was coined...

300-400 meters is quite a long swim, especially considering you've got to swim the same distance to get back in.  i would assume boaters in the area would not expect swimmers to be that far out, especially at night.  i hope the young man turns up somewhere alive.

You lost me at the first line.

But that's ok.

I think he swam too close to the sewerage outlets at the Southern end and the water which was murky brown and creates small waves. I'm Inspector Clouseau.

Clouseau solved his cases.

Happy ending for our missing Ukranian man.

The missing Ukrainian man, 27 year old Mykhailo Ryboichuk who went missing on December 10 has been found safe today (December 12).

It ends up that he was just going for a swim, got out of the water when he had finished, didn’t tell others that he’d returned and went back to his accommodation.

What! Did he miss to tell people that he got out of the water???
That must at least be a fine of 100K and/or 5 years.

Perhaps if the idiot had collected his belongings that he left at the restaurant, they wouldn't have alerted the authorities who wasted time and money searching!

great news !!!  evidently this guy can really swim unlike many other tourists that enjoy on thailand's beaches.
