Prawit’s watch scandal ‘a personal matter’: PM

PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha said yesterday his deputy’s possession of expensive watches was a personal matter, but no one could spare him if he is found guilty.

Photos of Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan wearing several luxurious watches on different occasions went viral on social media last week.

The controversy affecting the deputy prime minister began after he was spotted wearing what appeared to be a silver-and-black Richard Mille watch and diamond ring during a group photo with the reshuffled Cabinet at Government House on December 4.

While the items appear to be worth millions of baht, he failed to disclose them to the NACC in his assets disclosure.

Acting National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) secretary-general Worawit Sookboon said yesterday Prawit could explain his possession of the luxury watches any time before January 8.

Worawit also asked for time for the NACC to work on the issue, adding that the agency had the authority and legitimacy to investigate Prawit.

Political office holders are required to report their assets to the NACC before they take office and after they leave.

Worawit said the NACC would wait for an official explanation from the deputy prime minister, adding that he did not want to “pre-empt” the issue.

“It’s not complicated,” Worawit said.

Meanwhile, Prawit has kept silent after being approached by reporters recently.

it is not a personal matter for two reasons

- if he enriched himself illegally, then it is a criminal matter and needs to be investigated

- he is a public figure who is answerable "to the public" and he needs to answer, otherwise he should not be there

very simplistic fundamental values that everyone in public office should realise

Yes, you certainly do, sir.

Imagine that something you say can take 10 seconds, is extended to take 30 days.
Then imagine an issue that might in reality take 30 days to handle! According to the differens between 30 days and 10 seconds, then that would take a staggering amount of 259 200 days to fix.

Take that one home for christmas! :cheesy:

in such fiasco as Thai politicians often find themselves in...

beside, when you're an elected DPM and a general of this is that, the 'privacy'

train has left the station long time and few hinders of millions of baht ago....

Oh  come on....... a good old Junta diehard such as yourself knows this is all Thaksin's fault - the Junta are nothing but goodness and purity and all their actions are made solely for the benefit of the nation.

I am disappointed in you old chum Smelly, reason and logic are creeping into your posts.

No! Wrong! It’s not a personal matter. It’s a matter of public interest. He’s ‘supposedly’ number two in a powerful group of people who said they were taking over to stop corruption. That was their whole thing. Now your number two has been caught with some very expensive watches and you have the power to use 44 to show the people how serious you are about stopping corruption.

You are all public servants. You should always be publicly scrutinized. Don’t like it then walk away and retire.

‘a personal matter’: PM

Just like when man-boy and his motley crew are politely shown the door by the Thai public, when it comes to voting for whom they want to govern a once-proud nation. Exactly that . . . a personal matter.

It is of course not a personal matter, PM Prayut is the current political leader of Thailand and everyone under him in the government is his responsibility (especially since he is head of the NCPO and the NCPO appointed the NLA).  When the issue first arrived, he should have called him into his office (if it were someone else they would have been taken right from home or off the street) and said -- can you explain this.  If he was not able to explain it satisfactory -- he should have been fired from that position.  The NACC is responsible for investing corruption, but Prayut is responsible for everyone beneath him.   The preferential treatment and the lack of taking the issue seriously -- seriously underminds his supposed war on corruption (it is only a war on corruption for those that are not his people).

every time the top 3 as well as the minister of propaganda talk, i thank my lucky stars they are not my neighbors and i do not have to deal with them directly in any important way

You are absolutely right. Every time these people came knocking on your door, they wouldn't simply ask for a cup of sugar. Instead, they'd "borrow" items from your jewelry box.

Unfortunately, as public figures, people like Prawit and his ilk are in fact everybody's neighbor - and take full advantage of it.

Ah so, the 2 ic is not part of the no corruption, zero tolerance brigade then.

LOL that's it.  Yep, one would think it's not possible for 1 ic to simply sweep 2 ic's luxury-wristwatch fetish under the rug considering "zero tolerance" is the much ballyhooed mission statement.  Of course we all know it's only a handy catch-phrase.  As we all know, narcissistic 1 ic will do absolutely nothing but displace more hot air on the subject.  After all, admitting that 2 ic is corrupt would cause 1 ic to lose face confirming that this whole anti-corruption crusade is what it is... a sham and a joke.

I'm still waiting for Fearless Leader's boys in the band to root out corruption at any level in any area whatsoever.  One nagging question is this:  Why hasn't the well-entrenched Russian mafia been kicked out yet?  After all, it's only been 3 years and 7 months since the 'anti-corruption' crusader took over.  Unbelievably, Putin's worst, along with all the other foreign organized-crime groups and gangs, still seem to be operating here with impunity—only a few days shy of 2018 <expletive deleted>!  Meanwhile, the majority of locals continue to go about each new day with their fingers in their ears and their eyes wide shut singing la la-la la-la la-la while their nation sinks further into the abyss.  When will they finally wake up... February 30th?

Just how is a member of a military dictatorship which threw out the democratically elected government by force "answerable to the public".  They make the laws and he is only a criminal if the junta decide he is.

I read this morning that the PM displayed his Seiko which cost 250,000 Baht but he had this for years...and apparently he has others. However, he says they were all declared.

When one compares the price of Prawt's watches with the price of Prayuth's watches, one understands who is the real boss.
