I have a Thai relative diagnosed as having mild BPH. A 'hole in the wall' doctor prescribed some tablets to alleviate the condition but they don't work. The pill pack only shows [patient name and dosage and date but does not identify the medication which are unmarked small white pills.

Reading up on this I see that 'Beta Blockers are often prescribed to relax the urinary muscles.

Can anyone suggest what is available in good quality local pharmacies. Trade name and cost would be helpful.

This is not something that should be self-treated, your relative really needs to be under the care of a good urologist.

Indeed, a "hole in the wall" doctor giving out unnamed meds, cannot be relied on to have made the right diagnosis. The differential for this would include prostate cancer and prostatitis. Misisng those diagnoses can have serious conequences. In addition, if it is BPH, the medications are nto without side effecst and contraindications - relaly not a do-it-yourself matter.

When your relative does see a proper urologist it will be important to be able to tell him what meds have already been taken and for how long.

The most commonly used meds, if it is BPH, would be :

Finasteride 5mg. Local brand names are Firide, GPO-Finax 5 mg, Harifin-5, Proseride,  Prosteride and Proscar. The last is an expensive import, the other brands won't cost much. None of these match the description you provided. This is not a beta  or alpha blocker, rather it actually helps shrink the prostate, though the effect takes time.

Tamsulosin  or Doxazosin- these are alpha (not beta!!) blockers which do not reduce the size of the prostate buty help urination by relaxing bladder muscles. Used only when there is significant retention and effect is fairly quick. Brand names of Tamsulosin here are Avodart,  Harnal OCAS, and Uroflow.  Brand names of doxazosin are Dezcard, Dozozin, Cazosin, Carxasin, Cardoxa, and Cardura - last one an expensive import, the others cheap.

The Uroflow comes in small round white tabs but they are marked, one on side with the dosage (.4) and the other side with the code T95L. Dezcard, Dozozin and Cazosin are all white but don't come loose, they come in blister packs., and Dezcard and Dozozin also have the doasge written on them.  I don't know what Cardoxa looks like.

Silodosin is also sold as Urief in Thailand, but as Sheryl said... go see a urologist in a hospital.

While agreeing that a “hole in the wall” Doctor is not the way to go. Can I suggest googling the alternatives. Look up the Rezume treatment for a Prostrate, that is no larger than 80cc.

No. With respect to the estimable Sheryl, Avodart is a brand name of dutasteride.

Dutasteride is an alternative to finasteride.
