Fire destroys 8 houses in Bangkok slum community

By The Nation

A fire burned down eight houses in a squatter community in Bangkok’s Bang Plad district early on Friday, injuring one woman.

Police said the fire started at the community at the end of Soi Charansanitwong 78 in Bang Or sub-district at 2.25am.

Seven fire engines took about two hours to control the blaze after it swept through eight houses.

A woman, Praiprang Supsong, suffered serious burn and was rushed to the Vachira Hospital.

A resident, Somchai Ratanarangsikul, 82, said the fire started at a rented room next to his house and quickly spread to his house.

Somchai said he and his wife escaped after hearing neighbours shouting to alert the people to the fire. He said he failed to take any valuable with him and was sorry to lose a house that he has been living in for 50 years.

Wow, very sad when people already living on the ragged edge are dealt a blow like this. Best wishes to all involved.
