Thanks to technology and medical advances many older people are still living and in much better quality of life as before. I guess that should count for a forum like Thaivisa where the majority is older.

This Faustian pact, made possible by technology indeed, is going to cost dearly to society at large.

Like it or not, humans are supposed to live, on average, about 75 years, not 95, and certainly not over 100!

Baby boomers retiring today discover that pension funds are empty, or about to be...in fact, they would all be empty if it was not for the central banks shenanigans.

Why is that?

Well, it happens that their parents, from the former (silent) generation, are still here, collecting pensions that were never supposed to be paid for 30 years or more...40 years of work followed by 30 years of retirement, the math doesn't add up.

As if that was not enough, at the other end of the population pyramid, the young in age to reproduce are so busy social networking that they can't bother with the old fashioned practice of boyfriend-girlfriend, wedding and so on.

Thus, the reproduction rate is dropping dramatically, everywhere except in Africa (probably not enough networking over there).

The result is that the population pyramid is slowly but surely reversing itself, and will soon stand on its top!

How good is that for society?

Should we really thank technology for putting us in such a dire situation?

I remember when  everyone got televisions.  Anytime you went to visit friends, even at meal time,  the tele was on.  No conversation.  Everyone watched the TV.  Just as bad.  This sort of anti-social behaviour has been going on for years.

Television is certainly addictive, no question about that.

Yet, the major difference between television and smartphone is that you could not carry the former with you all day long!

Thus, your addiction was somehow under control.

Nowadays, things are clearly getting out of control...

We may have created a generation of zombies as per the topic heading but we may have also created a generation of know-it-all a*&^%%holes.

No need to bring your family into it.  Keep it civil.  (reference to "we may have also created")

Strange then, that I know of not a single politician prepared to advocate voluntary euthanasia. One would think that they'd be falling over themselves to bring it in. Instead they waffle on about such inanities as the sanctity of life ( while spending billions on weapons of war ), and ignore the enormous and growing rapidly elephant in the room of too many old people living too long and using too many public resources. All they do is increase the retiring age in an age when no one wants to employ oldies. Perhaps they think we'll all go away and starve to death quietly in a paper bag in a hole in the road, except in my country the paper bag would have to be installed by a professional paper bag installer and oldies can't afford them.

Did the TV give you directions when you were driving and how to find the best restaurant, gas station or doctor? My wife messaged me at the store and asked me to buy bananas but there were 4 kinds of bananas at the store?  What to do?  Take a photo and send to wife.  She circles the ones of her choice.  Smart phone eliminates most language problems in a foreign country for those men smart enough to use them effectively.

Thats just your ignorance, there are four countries and five US states where it's legal, of course there are politicians who support euthanasia, there have been since Ancient Greece!

You really should consider getting an app on your smart phone that keeps you up to date with current events.

Active euthanasia (in which a doctor administers a lethal dose of medication to a patient) and physician-assisted suicide (PAS) are legal in at least eight western countries ,one or both of the practices.

No one is hiding.  They are out there for 200 million people to see.  You can talk to them while they are in the shower or whatever or you can join them by putting your screen on line with theirs.  You can phone them up while in the shower.  Sorry, you don't have a clue.  Before you post again talk to a Thai 18 to 25 year old and get some real information about what they are doing on line.  These are social networking sites not porn.  Today's kids are not as uptight as you.

One of the terrible things with modern communication is that the addicts can't face a contradictory debate.

They have come to believe that coming up with a few fiery statements, while belittling those who disagree with said statements, is enough to prove that they are right.

Well, things are not that simple in the real world...as opposed to the virtual world and all its goodies.

To get back to your suggestion of making a few bucks while showering, what is to stop a 14 year old, pretending to be 18 of course, to try to make some pocket money that way?

And what is to stop a 70 year old, also pretending to be 18, to pay for watching?

Ain't that call paedophilia?

And then what's next?

What about a connection with the slave markets in Libya, where people could bid at the auctions?

We live in a terrible world and technology has a lot to do with it!

Not just because you don't want to live anymore.

To get it one has to be pretty much already dead.

I have no desire to exist in a rest home being tortured by day time tv for years.

Can't you remember before they got the TV and the radio was always on, even at meal time?  What really changed, less eye contact?

Actually, technology just allows evil scumbags to do bad things more easily. Imagine what the Nazis would have done with technology that allowed them to track down Jews!

DNA tests for everyone, but only possible with computerisation.

Dismissing the above reactions to your post which concern only terminally ill people, the thing is that most politicians are themselves...old!

Look at the warmonger Mc Cain...

Since euthanasia is a complex issue, I would rather advocate a policy of "let nature do its work and don't let doctors playing God!"

Say that, after 70, or 75, no life saving procedure should be authorized...people should be let go when nature calls them.

I have an uncle who was saved by a triple bypass at 85!

Now he is 97, waiting alone in a retirement home for death to show up again!

What is the meaning of that, for him and for society at large?

This is a sure sign of a society which has lost its bearings...

I believe you are trying to scare me with your fiery statement accusing anyone who uses current social media of being a pedophile.

If you had a clue or read what I said you would realize how the registration process works and that visuals work both ways.  I have yet to meet a 70 who could pull off being 18 years old in the shower.  If you know any 70 year  olds that look like 18 I'd like to meet them.  Furthermore I did not suggest making money in any way shape or form.

You are a terrible nasty person to suggest such a thing.  This is the last communication I will have with you.

Thanks for making my point of you, and your social networking fellows, not being able to stand in a contradictory debate.

As for pretending to be on the net whoever you like, I would suggest you to read Ready Player One...you will surely enjoy it...

I guess that's why they had the demonstrations against the evil government in Iran last week and the Arab spring a couple of years ago and the ladies spreading the news about being abused my men.  All of those were facilitated by technology and news is now vetted by thousands of bloggers.  Why is Trump having such a hard time?  Social media.  Kennedy was a bigger scumbag but no one knew about it.  You think religion can be determined by DNA?

You should have added a smiley face, as I thought you were being serious. Took me a while, but I got it in the end.

Thanks for the poor attempt at either humour or being insulting.   I was 100% serious, if you don't understand the benefits of keeping in touch with everyone you've ever called a real friend, then I feel very sorry for you.

I can only guess, but I assume you will be signing up to have spotty youths working for facebonk observe your every waking moment in your house, including in your bedroom.

To those of us that actually still have a functioning brain, the fact that anyone is seriously presenting that as something people should actually want proves the world is truly going mad. The most evil thing I have ever heard in my lifetime, and I've heard a lot of very evil things.

Remember, everything that you want to inflict on all of us is controlled by chips with a hackable design feature that can't be fixed.

I for one want nothing to do with your brave new world of mind control by people that want power over me, and not for my benefit.

No doubt, evil scientists are even now working how to implant chips into our brains so we can call up our thousands of friends while in the shower.

:post-4641-1156693976:

I will be the first in line when we can have implanted electronics.  Heads up displays in our field of vision, with up to date information and tracking of your friends location, embedded comms so no need to hold a phone, voice commands (we already have this) and things we can't imagine.

I saw a great comment on Twitter earlier this evening, which I saved because it applies to so many of the old guys on here  :-

"The older you are, the less excuse you have to be skeptical of the positive benefits of technological innovation because you've witnessed the revolution firsthand over the previous decades."

Implanted GPS would be useful, and how about a language translator.

The universal translator of Star trek would come in handy

I love GPS life has been so much better since google maps. Far better than the old gps stuff. Now you can share locations easy among friends save them on a map label them. When you got a new phone it all stays with you. Its great for location challenged people like me

Call me sceptical, but having 1,200 friends seems a lot...at least from a "mathematical" point of view.

I am not talking about acquaintances here, but real friends, people with whom you share more than a superficial relationship.

Let say that you make one new friend per week, with a two week break per year for good measure.

After 10 years of intensive friendship making, you still have "only" 500 friends.

So, it takes about 24 years to make 1,200 friends...

But that's not all, because during and after all this time, you have to cultivate all these relationships, something that requires quite an amount of time.

Let say that you have 8 hours of free time per day and that you dedicate all of it to keeping in touch with all your friends...well that would leave only 12 minutes per month for each one, not much to go into any depth...about the time I spent writing this high quality post.

Being part of the contingent of old farts who can't keep up with "progress", I am wondering how humanity managed to survive until the advent of the smartphone?

(Maybe we should get a new calendar, starting the day when the first smartphone was put on sale)

Going further, I am wondering how humanity managed to come up with quantum theory, about a hundred years ago, when people were still living in complete mental obscurity, not even having access to a calculator!

And yet, without quantum theory there would be no computers and obviously no smartphones.

Now, one may wonder what people will say in one hundred years about today: something like "without the smartphone, we would never have had..."

Please feel free to complete the last sentence.
