Suspects tried to ditch illegal drugs: police

By The Nation

Two suspected drug smugglers threw away 60,000 methamphetamine pills just before they reached a road checkpoint in Bangkok, but their action was too late to save them from arrest.

The two suspects were arrested at 1.30am on Wednesday at a checkpoint outbound on Rama II road in Bangkok’s Jomthong district.

They were identified as Pamorn Somekhiew, 26, and Warit Piambang, 19. Both are residents of Samut Sakhon’s Muang district.

Pol Colonel Chaiyakrit Pho-ah, commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 5 who headed the checkpoint, said the two were arrested after their pickup truck slowed down about 300 metres before reaching the checkpoint and a bag was thrown out of the passenger’s window.

A police officer who was stationed about 300 metres before the checkpoint radioed the checkpoint to stop the pickup after he saw the bag being thrown out.

Police later checked the bag and found 60,000 methamphetamine pills.

Chaiyakrit said the checkpoint was set up in accordance with the policy to get tough on drunk driving and to monitor the movement of illegal firearms and drugs.

Police said that Pamorn, the driver, admitted that he had bought the pills from a seller in Bangkok with the aim of reselling them to drug users in Samut Sakhon.
