We don't know any such thing.  History is history and after 70 years a lot of classified material is unclassified and we know more about what happened than they did in 1945.

This chap was often seen riding his bike around Chiang Rai. The other side of his helmet has the SS runes, and the front a swastika.

 

I snapped this picture at some lights. He got quite excited and swore at me in German.

 

I haven't seen him for a while - I do hope he hasn't fallen off his bike and hurt himself...

They lost, deserved to lose, and deserved the way they were treated after they lost.

 

There are still a few sad sacks who try to keep the memory of what was crushed alive, by dressing up like this.

Having studied history from all sides, there is no doubt surrounding the accuracy of the reporting of the appalling atrocities and genocide carried out by the nazis.

The greatest threat to Siam in the decades immediately preceding WW2 was colonisation. The British and the French had drawn up agreements on how the territory would be annexed, but once Hitler invaded Poland the whole thing was off the table. Hitler would never have been perceived here in the same way as in the West.

 

Of course, this has little to do with the stuff on sale - world history doesn't feature highly in the school system here and I imagine most locals know barely anything about him at all.

Yes, Thailand experienced World War 2 in their own particular way. That is true. But I don't think the sellers of Nazi merch in Pattaya are ideologically motivated, in any way. It's baht based. On the other hand, if you come across a copy painting shop here owned by an old Austrian peddling heroic Hitler poses, well, that would be different.

The intention of this thread is to talk about the topic of Nazi/Hitler merch openly for sale in 2018 Pattaya.

It's scope does NOT include the history of World War 2. 

 

Keeping on the theme, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has seen these Nazi merch displays for SALE. But as far as observing people BUYING it, I haven't seen that because it's not like I'm going to stand around there and watch. So any people that have seen people buying this stuff? If so, can you identify their nationalities? 

 

Or perhaps you bought some yourself. Hmm?

The vendor knows that the only power structures that the Thai population and the Thai authorities are remotely interested in are local ones. Note how you never see T-shirts on sale of local political heroes. Perhaps the Lenins and Hitlers actually represent figures from Thai politics like some kind of Thai dog whistle.

 

So, in summary, the Thai vendors don't care and don't understand what they are selling. They just want to make a buck or a baht.

I'm not so sure that it isn't sometimes a fashion statement. An unfortunate one, but it seems to me it depends on what the person showing it is thinking in wearing it. When I used to see a lot of Thai youths wearing over the top stylized Nazi shirts, I just didn't get the vibe that they were relating it to what Nazis actually are. There's probably an element of rebellion in it but that's not the same thing as actually identifying with or as Nazis. On the other hand in the west and with westerners, they know perfectly well what they are saying with such displays.

I have never personally seen Westerners wearing items celebrating Naziism in Pattaya, but I well believe they are around.

I have always thought it laughably ironic that their contribution to perpetuating the master race is producing progeny with a Thai.

Yeah but that was more about capitalizing on the Thai Hitler Nazi fashion trend. Not really directed at foreigners. These displays I'm seeing more often in Pattaya are.

This topic has been resurrected several times and being on TVF isn't going to change anything.

Plenty of bike gangsters wearing German WW2 helmet reproductions in my country and we fought Hitler. I believe American bike gangsters also like wearing them.

 

Let's not forget a certain popular prince wearing a Nazi uniform to a party or something, not too many years ago .

Same in Naklua , they sell it openly . When you know all the older Germans living in this area you might wonder , I don't think they sell many nazi scarfs per day.
