“Enjoy your Thailand holiday, but please leave the electronic cigarettes at home."

If you're going to Thailand, best to leave your e-cigarettes at home.

The Foreign Ministry issued a travel alert last Thursday informing Israelis going to Thailand that e-cigarettes are illegal in the country. The alert followed the detention of an elderly Israeli couple last week for possession of e-cigarettes in the Land of Smiles, and a fine of some NIS 4000. They were also threatened with arrest.

The consulate in Bangkok investigated the incident and found that, since 2014, vaping or the possession of e-cigarettes in Thailand is illegal.

Since Thursday, the following alert has been placed on the National Security Council's travel advisory page: “The Foreign Ministry recommends that Israelis refrain from entering the country [Thailand] with an electronic cigarette. A person found to be breaking the law may be fined, tried, and imprisoned.”

Better still, if you like to smoke an electronic cigarette look for a country which doesn't have such draconian laws. There are lots of alternatives to Thailand if you're a 'vaper'.

I'd like to see more official warnings like this from different countries around the world.

When you can end up in prison for something which is not illegal almost everywhere else in the world it should be a priority for governments to make everyone aware of this fact.

I hope the Thai tourist industry dies a slow, painful and very costly death due to the many shortsighted and draconian law changes in recent years.

The article quoted a Thai government spokesman saying the ban was “introduced for health reasons and that it was originally suggested because electronic cigarettes were luring young people into smoking.”

And it had nothing at all to do with the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly losing massive revenues !

utter non sense. there's a few large websites still selling them and the liquids. probably more ecig smokers in the smoking area at the office block near me than people smoking cigarettes. just an excuse to fine someone i think. i personally use an ecig and buy liquids and parts on line from a thai website. stopped smoking it outside though as have heard of a few people being fined and having them confiscated just recenly

I saw a holiday maker last week smoking one I approached him and told him that if he were to be caught he could face imprisonment he thought I was joking until I explained to him that It was regarded as a drug . As there are so many people from around the world smoking these maybe it’s time that it should be advertised both by the airport authorities and travel agents as a lot of people seem to be unaware of the law. Thailand must be one of a very few countries to ban this product I wonder why ?

Stop it! You're using logic in the wrong country for it.

Because ignorance of the law is no excuse, and by not advertising what the law is, the cops then have the right to use "police discretion" in enforcement

Thailand will never air their dirty linen in public

I wouldn't go as far as to hope the tourist industry dies, but, as has been said so many times before, the government/Thai attitude will do the usual thing and wait until say, the tourist industry does nose-dive, then at that point will wonder why.

Then they will panic to try and and recover the lost visitors - sadly it will be a bit like trying to push string uphill.

Once tourists have made the decision to find a new holiday location, if they're happy with it I'd say you have a snowball's chance in hell of getting them back here again.

Ill conceived and backed by nothing but hot air. Yes go to any other even slightly enlightened country and spend freely. I don't vape or smoke. But this is just half baked stupidity not science....once again Thailand takes careful aim at its foot and shoots....imagine how much cleaner the beaches would be without cigarette butts....and e cigs are proven safer....but it's ok

It could be worse, vaping on a selected beach, on a Wednesday sitting on a deck chair!

I agree with you entirely, it seems like they are trying kill off tourism, which would bring the prices down of hotel rooms and the like, but then applying local logic it could have the opposite affect so as to maintain income levels!

Maintaining income levels - absolutely correct.

Years ago, I was sitting in a beer bar in Pattaya. I knew the owner, having spoken with her before.

I asked why her beer prices had increased. The reply was that as there were less customers in town, they needed to charge more for the beer to still make money.

No word of of a lie. As we cynics say: Thai logic.

Smoking should be forbidden everywhere in public. Let people kill themselves at home if their brain is not working well enough to understand (my appreciation to Darwin) but do not bother others.

I noticed repeatedly that people smoke in restaurants regarding them as an open place and the fan is doing the rest to bring the smoke to other guests even when eating. Such situations should be avoided.
