inexpensive option for in-patient stay (gastroenterology)?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I may need to get an intravenous treatment for a diverticulitis that did not go away with oral antibiotics, which usually involves a 4-5 days stay at a hospital.

Does anybody have a recommendation for an affordable place in connection with a half-decent gastroenterologist? Anywhere in Bangkok or all the way down the Eastern corridor to Rayong.

Sure I could do that at Bumrungrad, BNH or Bangkok hospital, but that would be very pricey and they only offer expensive single rooms, which I definitely don't need.

Bangkok Christian comes to my mind, but I haven't found any information about capable gastroenterologists there online. Or Mission hospital? SanPaolo maybe? But they belong to BDMS too, so certainly they won't be cheap. Queen Sirikit hospital Sattahip would be an option too, but they obviously don't have AC, which - due to some other medical condition - is 100% essential for me.

Any input would be appreciated

First if all, it is not true that Bumrungrad  offers only private rooms. They offer a range of room types starting with 4 bedded ones.

However if you do not specify, any quote you get may be for a private room. Also on admission, in both Bumrungrad and elsewhere, a foreigner will often only be shown the more expensive rooms unless they specify they want other.

And - more important - the room rate is usually no the bulk of the cost. medication costs in particular are significant.

The least expensive option for what you describe is a government hospital. However, arranging for this at a government hospital would not be easy, it would  require multiple visits and runnin ga gauntlet of doctors before getting to a specialist and then having to convince him or her of the need.

Among private hospitals the least expensive  would probably be:

St Louis hospital on Sathorn: unfortunately the website is only in Thai now so I cannot suggest a doctor.

Mission Hospital: only one GI specialist on staff, and no colorectal specialists. But this is not rocket science and there there is a very good American GP who might be well able to manage this, with or without consult from specialist as he sees fit  http://www.mission-hospital.org/en/component/k2/item/54-dr-nick-walters.html

Bangkok Christiian Hospital  - I suggest this doctor who is an excellent colorectal specialist https://www.bch.in.th/en/doctor-th-4/surgery/item/584-doc22.html

Wherever you go be sure to specify that you want either ward room or semi provtae room (as applicable) and be prepared to stand firm if there is any  push back from the admissions staff.

Note he is only there on Mondays.
