Election delay not our decision, says junta

In response to a series of rallies against a possible delay of the general election, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered authorities to explain the situation to the public, Government spokesman Lt-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Wednesday.

A group of pro-election demonstrators have held rallies, including one last Saturday, against a decision by junta-appointed legislators last month to postpone promulgation of the MP election bill for 90 days. This decision makes an election unlikely to happen before February next year.

The protesters have said that they will hold rallies until the election is held.

“Whenever the group holds an activity, we have to provide the public with information from both demonstrators and the government without creating any war of words,” Sansern said.

Sansern said it was not the government that decided to postpone the election, but the National Legislative Assembly.

He said the National Council for Peace and Order had no intention to prolong its stay in power.

“We did not say we won’t let an election be held,” Sansern said. “But with the road map, is there anything wrong with postponing it [the election] a bit?”

how many hundreds of iterations of 'it is not our fault' do we have to endure from our dear rulers;

nary a 'we are trying our best' in the mix

When government officials repeatedly promise (five times and counting) an election date and fail to deliver despite having absolute power over all the branches of government and the Thai people, there is something seriously wrong with their credibility and ability to govern, especially in a promise democratic society.

Obviously members of the ruling military junta didn't pay attention in Science lab while attending school.

Take a test tube, add 10 ml of CH3COOH, 1 gram of NaHCO3, then place a cork in the test tube and wait.  Record results.

Repeat the above experiment, but this time place enough pressure on the cork so that it is impossible for the cork to come out and wait.  Record results.

If any of the junta had done this experiment, then they would know exactly what is coming down the road.

Add to the mix that Western NGOs which promote 'democracy' are probably at this moment supplying democracy activists with the moral equivalent of CH3COOH + NaHCO3 while the current military junta supplies the test tube, the cork, and are applying as much pressure to the cork as they possibly can -- this will be an interesting year to watch the outcome of a social experiment that has been conducted numerous times in the past few decades.  It seems that those holding the test tube and the cork never seem to read history.

Still not sure a democracy is the right solution for Thailand and in many other countries it seems. When you are in the minority democracy is just mob rule.

Still it is the best we have, or would that be a republic. :)

The USA experiment shows that even a constitution and being a republic does not stop democracy from taking control.

So what else........

Benevolent dictator? Ruled by a monarchy? Lots is tried but if the population chooses handouts over real solutions the result will always be the same.
