Thais who try to cut in front of you in line

I notice this behavior happens in the convenience stores, less so at a big store. Does anyone have a Thai family member who mentions why the Thais do this? Seems to go against their culture, but what do I know.

Me and the wife were waiting for a bike by Terminal 21 on Saturday to go home, one woman just walked straight in front of us on to the next bike that was free. No looking or acknowledging other people waiting before her.

She hates it too and finds it so rude, especially after living in England where we're thankfully switched on when it comes to these things.

In curious too.. Because I have the same experience.. Or I am totally ignored in favor of serving a thai ! Really annoys me. I have mentioned the rudeness to either the staff at 7 or the pushy Thai customer and in either scenario in met with smiles and laughter. 3 years here and I roll with the punches. 97.2% of the time 555

this has happened to me a couple of times over the years  my way out has been to just block their way and almost politely   tell them to wait seems to work  otherwise you can use the Japanese method  and just push them back equally hard as they pushed in      (experience from Narita airport )

No problems with Thais but Indians and Pakistanis who want to get right up behind you at the checkout piss me off. No sense of personal space.

in the checkout in a supermarket on a Friday morning before prayers in saudi after the israeli invasion of gaza two 7 foot pashtuns got right up and personal and they weren't wantin' to be friends...the look on the check out clerk's face said it all...one of their women was lookin' thru my goods to see what she might like...

I managed to get thru it but it was unpleasant...almost lynched in a supermarket in saudi...sheesh...now in Thailand when some ignorant turd is bein' a nuisance at the sebben I just smile...

Queuing is a Western trait that is still being learned by people in Asian, not everyone fully understands the concept yet so be patient. If you try and point out nicely and politely that there's a queue, I have yet to see any Thai react negatively.

Isn't it intuitive that if one person is waiting behind another, it is unfair to step ahead of that person?

Also the Thais seem to know what to do at the big stores. It's the little ones where a percent of them (not a majority) can have trouble

That's too funny! It's intuitive if you're a westerner, it's definitely not if you're Asian. Cathay Pacific flights from Hong Kong to China in the late 1990's used to have a real problem letting their business and first class passengers board first because as soon as the flight was called hordes of Chinese economy class passengers would surge to the gate and it was funny to watch but really difficult to control. More affluent Asians who have travelled have mostly learned the trait overseas or in places where social standards demand, the poor and rural people don't get such education.

I think there are different situations with queues.

If i.e. people wait in line at the BTS counter there is normally a clear line. And in my experience almost everybody gets to the end of that line.

Sometimes it's not obvious where the end is because the line makes U turns. But then it's normally enough to show the person the real end of the line.

In other situations the line is not so clear. I.e. recently I bought Somtam at a street vendor. There were already a few people waiting. So I waited as well. Then a Thai guy on a motorcycle arrived and he told the shop owner what he wanted. She kept it in mind and after she prepared Somtam for the other people she prepared it for him. Unfortunately my mistake was that I didn't order on arrival what I wanted. I thought I will wait a moment until the seller looks at me and asks me. Next time I will order on arrival what I want - and maybe some people will think that I am rude and why don't I wait...

when your at 7-11 getting your stuff scanned they casually walk up and point to the smokes and blurt out what brand they want. Even the cashiers give them dirty looks

seen many a Thai man do this and the cashier forgets the waiting queue to fulfill his request immediately.

I have had this happen a few times...The most annoying one was at the post office where you are given a queue number and take a seat, my number came up and as l went to the counter a bloke that had just walked in jumped in front of me, l waved my number ticket under his nose and put my stuff on the counter, he backed off, he was not happy as folk saw him lose face....:whistling:

Maybe he was rude, but maybe he was not used to tickets in the post office. I had it before in a repair shop that I went to the counter and then someone at the counter told me there is in the corner somewhere a box with numbers. That was not obvious at all.

Most of the time it's someone with a quick question. What they see as a pragmatic utilization of time; for the most part understandable for its efficiency. Granted the interruption can be annoying, but does it really make sense to wait in line 20 minutes to ask a two second question like, 'What aisle is dog food on?" If the two second question looks like its turning into a 2 minute interruption, the counter person usually tells the queue cutter that they'll have to wait their turn.

There's always a Correct Queue for everything

and in this case the rude one should have found the Enquiries Queue

Only time I'd accept the queue jumping effect,

is if the attendant voluntarily turns to her alternative serving counter,

to sell some smokes - because there is a designated 'alternative' queue set up as that

Best way for me & them is to just say in Thai

Kot thort Kup/Excuse Me

Mee Que kup/There is a Que

Then they know & apologize even if they knew already.

They save face & always just say Oh excuse me/kor thort

I find the Chinese are the worst offenders for it, and the Thais hate them for it as well. Chiang Mai airport security screening would have to be the worst hotspot for Chinese pushing in line that I've ever seen.

I've been here a couple of years and haven't found the Thais too bad. To be fair, I'm a relatively tall and imposing guy, so I dunno if they just give me a bit of a wide berth. Happened to me at the supermarket for the first time in ages a couple of days ago. I was waiting at the butchery counter and a 20 something year old Thai girl came up and just yelled at the server she wanted the rest of the beef mince in the counter. He ignored her and served me, so in addition to my steak, I bought the remaining amount of beef mince (only 300 or so grams) as well. The look on her face was priceless. Now I've got 300g of beef mince that I have no use for, but it was money well spent.
