Thailand's tourism body has said in a statement that it "strongly opposes any form of sex tourism"

Do they have any ideas or proposals how 'Culture Tourists' will replace the 40% the sex industry contributes to the GDP?

The irony is that the sex here is soooooo mediocre. It's widely available but the "hostesses" are lazy, uninspired and bored... ok better than nothing for those with zero sex life besides going to prostitues but i prefer good old boom boom with my partner ?

Well TAT has to say that doesn't it? It can hardly come out and say it supports it even if it really does. TAT creates a new Hub. How would it sound?

Thailand the Hub of Sex and Prostitution

Anyway Pinocchio has said Thai people are not allowed to talk about the prostitution industry because he doesn't want outsiders knowing about it.

The puuyai at the ministry probably collaborated on this statement at their local karaoke bars while banging back Johnnie Walker blue label prior to taking their favorite hostess to the nearest curtained love hotel for a night-cap.

Back to reality:  The majority of the sex industry in Thailand is Thai catering to Thai.  But that sort of bursts the illusion of morality that those in leadership positions want to project to those silly enough to believe them.

For years the usual spin has been........' prostitution is illegal in Thailand but its tolerated.'

They make it sound like the government is reluctant to keep it going.   What a joke.

Prostitution is the only  major sector of the economy that can always be relied on to keep foreign

reserves pouring into the Kingdom and well paid employment for both genders young and old.  123 000 prostitutes in LOS.??   Not even close.

Amnesty Int estimated the number of sex workers just  in Pattaya  at around 25,000 back in the early nineties.

Atleast a million women work in the local Thai sex trade .

Thailand does not just receive money from the " SexTourists " that alight from Airplanes at Swampy, which boost the Thai economy by an estimated 10 % of its GDP. .

For years now, one of Thailand,s greatest exports has been the " Working Girls and boys " that have left the shores of Thailand in search of pavements lined with Gold, and who send money back to their Motherland for family, and to buy land and property.

Sex tourists both enter and leave Thailand, its a two way thing.

Add these people to the equation, and the GDP figure would be in the region of 20 % at a guess.

Thats the reasons why " Sex Tourism " is strongly condemned by the Thai Authorities, but is openly allowed to flourish.

Would prostitution be criminalized and the usual holiday makers do not come anymore, the country could not continue to develop anything, there wouldn't be enough money from Thai produced items.

From Wikipedia:

Estimates of the number of prostitutes in Thailand vary widely. No Thai government has ever conducted a formal survey. Estimates are subject to controversy. A 2004 estimate by Dr. Nitet Tinnakul of Chulalongkorn University gave a total of 2.8 million sex workers, including two million women, 20,000 adult males, and 800,000 minors under the age of 18.

According to a 2001 report by the World Health Organisation: "The most reliable suggestion is that there are between 150,000 and 200,000 sex workers. In its annual human rights report for 2008.

It has been suggested for example that there may be as many as 10,000 prostitutes on Ko Samui alone, an island resort destination not usually noted for prostitution, and that at least 10 percent of tourist dollars may be spent on the sex trade.

An estimate published in 2003 placed the trade at US$4.3 billion per year, or about three percent of the Thai economy. In 2015 Havocscope said that about US$6.4 billion dollars in annual revenue was being generated by the trade, a figure which accounted for 10 percent of Thailand's GDP. Havocscope claims that sex workers in Thailand send an annual average of US$300 million to family members who reside in more rural areas of Thailand. of course a lot of money is sent to poor parents who are rice farmers from Isaan.

US $ 6.4 billion is  a lot of money and they must know that they can't let this money go. And the $ 300 million the sex workers send to families can't be swept under the carpet.

In what world do these soldiers live? And that was all started by an African PM who told people to go to Thailand for a sex holiday? Unbelievable.

But it happened before when a Minister wanted to make that happen and criminalize prostitution with a funny outcome:

In July 2016 it was reported that the Thai government intended to abolish the sex industry. Ms Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, the tourism minister, said "Tourists don't come to Thailand for [sex]. They come here for our beautiful culture" and that "We want Thailand to be about quality tourism. We want the sex industry gone". Kobkarn was replaced as tourism minister in November 2017. And only guess who's fault it was that she got replaced? The same people who want to stop prostitution now!!!!!

In 2003, the Ministry of Justice considered legalising prostitution as an official occupation with health benefits and taxable income and held a public discussion on the topic. Legalisation and regulation was proposed as a means to increase tax revenue, reduce corruption, and improve the situation of the workersHowever, nothing further was done.

Of course do tourists only come for a seven headed snake culture where even Thais don't get all the meanings of the different smiles.

What happened to the Land of Smiles?

There were researches a while ago and if prostitution will be banned, Thailand would definitely sooner, or later look like Burma which is around 40 years behind Thailand regarding infrastructure, roads, technology, etc..

If they are serious about this then they need to spend some of the money the country makes

on Tourism on a Social Security system that will look after the 120,000 families that survive off it

& also spend some serious money on sewerage treatment & greasetrap plants along with the police controlling the highways properly to minimize tourist deaths or there will be nobody even bother

to visit.

Oops, never bring up sex tourism again they are on to us !!!!

There are around 123,530 sex workers in Thailand, according to a 2014 UNAIDS report.

Can you imagine how many people are employed to service the needs of the sex workers and their customers and venues,  and accommodation requirements. Hair salons. Beauty Salons. Food Vendors, etc, etc.

Personally I think that, irrespective of anyone's moral stance on prostitution. It's been part of general humanity for a very long time. And in my opinion, it's ever likely to be. I feel that acceptance of the "occupation" together with proper control and regulations (and taxation - difficult I know) is the only logical way forward in Society. But no doubt the Religious fraternity will continue to be obstructive.

Ban sex tourism and might as well shut down half of Thailand's touristy towns, cities and islands,

and will probably lose big chunk of incoming tourists and will have a million or more Thai people out

of works overnight....

90% of tourists are not there to sleep with hookers. Massive amount of families, couples and backpackers.

50% of expats might leave though.

15 years ago, male tourists outnumbered female by 2 to 1.  I did a quick google, but couldn't find any current statistics of tourist arrivals by gender.  If that figure has dropped to 1 to 1, then sex tourism is dying.

Tourists numbers would have tripled in that time. ST isnt dying, just more others. Lots of Chinese tour groups.

37,000,000 tourists

123,000 sex workers

equals 300 clients each, per year, or there about... that’s close to 6 clients a week, and on the seventh, they slept ?????

But wait.... that doesn’t include servicing locals, which by all accounts, is the biggest market for sex workers.... so mayhaps, not being Christian and all, they pulled multiple members on the seventh day instead ?????

Your maths are bad. 18.5m females arent sleeping with hookers and most of the men aren't either.

And Thailand would have 1m sex workers.

Are some of the quality lady, Chinese tourists hoping to snare a westerner? I reckon they could be. This could account for their great increase in numbers.

They travel in large groups.

Last year, Thailand's tourism industry recorded its highest revenue in history, raking in $53.76 billion, a 12 percent increase from 2016.

That!......is a lot of swill for the trough, little wonder the current snouts are so reluctant to change the current feeding arrangements.
