Eurovision 2018 Fan Thread! (Too early?)

Featured Replies

It's not that time of year again.

Eurovision 2018 to take place in Lisboa Portugal in May.

It got on my radar when I heard of Israel's entry. Last year there was this big drama announcement that Israel was leaving Eurovision. So I was very surprised that they're back without any gap.

And what a song!

To me Eurovision without Israel is like the World Cup without the USA (so sad!).

So starting (too) early this year. Deal with it. Move to gay forum if you want, bosses.

It's not early. It's too late! I'm joking of course. I love Eurovision. I've been following for more than 15 years. I'm surprised that Australia now is part of it and it is more than welcome. I would love to see a Globalvision that would be a mega competition around the world. That would be definitely fun :)

I am also upset and sad at the same time that Turkey is not part of ESC anymore. They've had great entries in the past like Mor Ve Otesi and Manga :)

Israel's TOY is getting lots of buzz now as the favorite to win. That would still be shocking (politics) but you never know.

Uganda does not have a vote --

Australia always wins over the UK they Tamper will their Balls in the Ashes they Tamper with our Music in Eurovision :smile:

I just called Donald. He predicted that some S*hithole eastern European Country will win (again). Threathening to cut off all funding to that country if that should happen. Using the savings to finance the new US-Embassy in Jerusalem.

Cheers.

Now it's not too early!

9 days away.

I sampled all the songs and I guess my tastes are "normal" enough because this top 10 closely mirrors most of the songs that seemed to have a chance to me too.

I think it's pretty obvious that Israel's Toy is a big favorite but that doesn't mean it will win for obvious reasons.

2009 winner Alexander Rybak is back from Norway, but not sure why.

Finland's Monster seems a real contender with Britain's Got Talent standout Saara Aalto.

OK, Bulgaria's Bone, I don't really get why that's rated high but heck that could be a good clue that it's a winner. :stoner:

Is it a matter of time for a winner from Belgium?

Estonia's La Forza seems a cisgender ripoff of  Conchita Wurst's winning song.

Now for a Toy parody, because you know you want it --

While Israel is the clear and strong favorite to win, let's consider the other entries that are considered to be in the running. Sweden's seems catchy. If Norway wins, I'm gonna barf.

France

Czech Republic

Norway

Bulgaria

Sweden

Estonia

Fiery threat from Cyrus?

It's definitely a Eurovisiony song.

Cyprus is winning according to the bookmakers.

My own country with Alexander Rybak should finish in the top 10 . He won it before so he could get votes based on that . The song is nothing special .

Yep, Cyprus is now the clear favorite.

Israel was leading for a really long time in the odds but it's now Cyprus.

Perhaps it was overexposure to "Toy" and people eventually got tired of the novelty of the chicken noises.

Y'all know who won by now, yeah?

Don't want to spoil it for anyone.:stoner:

Terrible song , one of the worst winners for many years if you ask me.

Austria should have won it.

The judges seemed to agree with you about Austria but they rated Toy very highly as well. If they hadn't, it wouldn't have won. I hadn't noticed the Austrian entry before the final but the performance indeed was very good. But I still think it was surprising that it did so well with the judges.

Toy is very polarizing. It's a love or hate thing. I love it but I actually think Israel's Golden Boy was even more worthy. I reckon the Toy thing was largely about timing, a very catchy song, very novel presentation, and it hooked with the current "Me Too" movement. I don't think it would have won without that combination.

So too late for spoilers. The cat's out of the bag, or better to say, the chickens.

The previous winner from Portugal seriously hated the Toy song as fast food pop. Well I loved his song and Toy. I think most people can appreciate different approaches to music.

It has been 20 years since Israel won Eurovision. I reckon there is going to be some heat about this as the BDS movement didn't really exist 20 years ago.

Netta Barzilai of Israel Wins Eurovision With a Chicken Dance

...

Ms. Barzilai said she previously felt pressured to perform in the soulful voice of Adele or Aretha Franklin — “to stand as a diva, cover myself with black clothes and spread my arms and sing out of my heart” — because audiences could not imagine a “big, funny pop star.” That is why, she said, “a star of my size looking like me and sounding like me is groundbreaking in Israel.”

OK, now it's seriously too early to talk about Eurovision 2019, but I was curious about the venue. Netta mentioned Jerusalem at the finale but I wasn't sure if that was definite. The previous Eurovision venues in Israel have always been there but many people (including me) think that Tel Aviv a much better fit. The lyric in the wonderful song "Golden Boy" said "Let me show you Tel Aviv" after all. Well, apparently not. Tel Aviv has officially announced they won't be competing so that means, yes, next year in Jerusalem.

It was clear from the start that Israel would win. She sang very well, but I hated the stage performance, it's repulsive!

It was clear she was the favorite but remember last minute Cyprus fire diva had better odds and there was always the cloud of politics possibly preventing the win as well.

Turns out she had one of the most impressive wins in ESC history.
