It appears MS is trying, and succeeding, to have Excel be the name of of the type of program, supplanting the term spreadsheet.  "Do it in Excel" says the teacher, who is not very familiar with other products that do the same thing.  The kids go out into the world and Excel becomes an essential business tool.

When I was a kid the adults would use 'refrigerator' and 'Frigidaire' interchangeably, and it made sense because it said Frigidaire right there on the door.  Anyone recall that when the blender first appeared it was an "Osterizer"?

I don't know if this tactic will work so well with Word, maybe it's too generic a term.

I suspect in the near future that MS will somehow ding the format of Excel files so they are longer interchangeable with the other spreadsheet programs, in a way that open-source developers will not be able to accommodate.  They did this in the 1990s by making their products incompatible with OS/2.

I recently (January, 2018) bought two (2) Office 2016 licenses on eBay, I think one was ~ $11, the other ~ $13. Both are legitimate, legal and working fine.

I understand that in the EU, and perhaps elsewhere (but not the U.S.) MS licenses (incl. Windows) can be legally resold (but not on media).

This topic has come up often here, and it is pretty easy to find the supporting EU court judgement(s).

"An author of software cannot oppose the resale of his ‘used’ licences allowing the use of his programs downloaded from the internet"

Below 2012 and 2016 articles give a good layman's summary of the EU Court of Justice judgement and at the bottom of the first/2012 article is a link that takes you to the actual 2 page EU Court Press release/judgement.   The second/2016 article gives an update on some challenges/clarification to the EU Court ruling.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/07/03/eu_court_secondhand_licence_ruling/

https://www.itassetmanagement.net/2016/10/31/secondary-software-2016/

Basically, the reason you see so, so many ads on Ebay and other sites selling cheap licenses for many products is because the EU Court of Justice said it  legal to resale used license in Europe.   Usually the resellers you see selling these products are based in Europe where its legal to resale used licenses, but these sellers are really marketing on a worldwide basis.  That is, log onto your Ebay or similar online store from Thailand (or any country) and buy a license from a reseller in Europe.

And the three Office 2016 Pro licenses I bought from a Ebay reseller in Jan 2017 are still working fine on my three computers.  If I remember right the seller was based in Spain and had sold thousands of Office 2016 licenses on Ebay over a half year or so with like a 99.9% positive rating.    And my two Windows 10 Pro license bought of Ebay from a EU based reseller in Sep 15 are still working fine on my two computers running Win 10 (my third computer still runs Win 7).  I think this seller was in the UK who had also sold thousands of various Windows OS licenses and also had like a 99.9% positive rating.

Also had MS Office. Installed with the 21 x 1.44MB floppies. That was a joy to install. And a copy, even back then!!

Which version of Office?

MS Office 97 Professional came on 55 disks and standard came on 45.

MS Office 4.3 came on 43 disks.

I'm thinking it was Office 95 (AKA MS Office 7) but am not sure. Also, 21x 1.44 disks may be wrong, perhaps 25 looking at the below table. I do know it was a government corporate version, so it may have been further clipped.

My, you do ask in depth questions from 31 years ago.................. If you want to relive the Office experience and download and try to run the old versions (not sure what OS you would need to be compatible) try this:

https://winworldpc.com/product/microsoft-office/95

The tabs take you to the other versions, 2.x, 3.x, 4.0, 4.2, 4.3, 95, 97/98, 2000, 2001 (Mac) & XP (2002 Beta)..................

Serial for Office 95 Pro is on the right at the bottom of Information.

Office 365 is nothing more than a subscription-based version of the most current  Office version, which is Office 2016 right now.    You still see Office 365 when looking at your version description but it's really identical to the latest non-subscription-based Office 20XX.   Kinda like two identical houses but putting a different color of paint on each, different street address, etc.

See the MS webpage as to how they describe the difference between Office 365 and Office 2016.

Now, let's say MS comes out with an Office 2019 (non-subscription) later this year which sites like ComputerWord indicate MS will.   Then your Office 365 should automatically update to Office 2019 although it will say it's Office 365.

Like I have non-subscription Office 2016....and when I'm go to the View Updates in the menu area where I can check for the latest update it will actually takes me to an Office 365 page where it says "Applies to Office 2016....."   It tells you what the latest version of Office 365 is (which also applies to Office 2016).  And the version showing below matches my Office 2016 version number of version 1803 Build xxxx.   See snapshot below.

Now once Office 2019 comes out my Office 2016 will not upgrade to Office 2019, but I will continue to get Office 2016 updates until Oct 2025 when MS lifecycle support ends for Office 2016.

In my experience, I have found that there are minor differences between Office 2016 and 365. All but one of our PCs run 365 and one runs 2016. The version with 2016 gets updated less regularly and is gradually showing a different (less) set of features as new (generally useless) features are added.

Is there something particular you need to typically do with email that you can only do via the desktop version of Outlook, that you can't do via the web version of Outlook?  I haven't come across anything that fits into that category for my email use.

Sharefile plugin and category implementation & sorting are 2 things that I use on the desktop client that are either not there or very limited on the web version.

Hi All,

I am completely Green re Tech info but a search threw up this thread so I'll ask here....

Whenever I open documents/files using word or xl this box appears:

image.png.d6505d1d2664cadcf87b368931838717.png

Can this be solved by purchasing a licence key via ebay & if so is it delivered electronically & just a matter of copy and paste?

I'm using MS Office Pro Plus 2010.

       Thanks for any replies

It shows that it's not activated and you should purchase a key. best would be to purchase a 2016 Pro key and delete your old office. Go for MS office 2016 Pro

I bought two legit keys for the 2016 Pro version for 200b off ebay. I also bought a 10 pc antivirus key, also legit.

I had to log on to register the keys. 100% legit. 365 is a ripoff if you never use all of the features.
