Renewal of Thai driving license - requirement

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

As often shared news about the recent laws and keep updating regulations,

what about the required documents to renew a Thai driving license?

As I knew in the past years:

1) medical certificate (check your eyes vision)

2) residency certificate: from immigration / or issued from embassy

hand out these along with your expired license and take the exam, that's all needed,

still the same? or any thing else changed?

please advise if any foreigner recently (2018) renewed his/her Thai driving license to confirm the requirements accordingly,

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Regards

expired license

How long is it expired?

Less than one year?

Was it temporary (2yr) or standard "5yr"?

Necessary to answer.

Reports coming out of Land Transport Office Pattaya that you can no longer renew after your birthday and get six years and have to resit the tests ( unconfirmed)

the question was about the required documents,,, not about test or any else..

For that you need the medical certificate.

I can't tell (but suspect) that they want to see this new type introduced lately.

Residence certificate from immigration is always needed.

(sidenote: Pattaya seems to refuse yellow book against all logic and practice elsewhere)

Passport of course.

And copies, copies, copies.

take the exam

For a license expired only 3 week there is no "exam" to do.

Just the usual physical tests (eye and reaction tests) and watching some video(s).

?

I hesitate to comment on the Pattaya office.

My comments are from experience up here (motorcycle 2yr to 5yr in 2017,  car 5yr to 5yr last month) and from other reports in the forum.

If "tests" would mean the physical tests: yes, always.

Theory test: No. Only if expired for more than one year.

I got my "6 years" on March 13, valid until March 12, 2024.

(note that the "Issue date" is the date of the first 5yr license issued, not the date of last extension, almost 12 years with one extension)

Does a 5 year car license need to be expired before you can renew or does it need to be renewed before expiration ?

You can do it up to three months before expiry and up to one year after expiry.

Expired more than one year: redo theory test ("45 out of 50").

Expired more than three years: complete redo, theory and practical test.

And as I described I got my "6 years" a day after expiry/my birthday.

There is no indication/news/website info that this has changed.

Similar rule to Thai ID cards ("8 years" but almost 9 years if done one day after expiry=birthday).

  • Thanks 1

@waxpro

From some of your other posts I assume you are in Bangkok(?) where they usually handle stuff professionally to the written rules not some selfmade rules like in Pattaya.

So no concern here.
