Two of the world’s leading powerlifting, fitness athletes and social media stars are leading a special showcase demonstrating the international sport of Powerlifting in Bangkok.

Layne Norton and Holly Baxter headlined a special program of fitness and nutrition coaching over April 28 and 29, followed by a VIP press day on this April 30th. Fully endorsed and supported by International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), the program highlights the IPF’s commitment to developing the sport of drug-free competitive powerlifting globally, bringing this extraordinary show of strength, focus, balance and dedication to lifting to growing and increasingly enthusiastic weightlifting and fitness audiences in Thailand.

John Coyle, future President of the Thai Powerlifting Federation (TPF), a newly created Federation affiliate in Thailand, introduced the arrival of the sport, explaining, “Powerlifting attracts a massive following of athletes globally, and we want to bring this sport to Thailand, to connect it to a new generation of lifters. The lifting community in Thailand can at times be inclined to follow a certain previously established (or assumed) ‘template’ for what is possible in lifting; that is, that performance-enhancing drugs are necessary to achieve one’s best. Supported by the IPF, powerlifting is a sport that is 100% drug-free, and this is a key principal for anyone who competes in the sport. We want to encourage all kinds of fitness enthusiasts, lifters and sports fans in Thailand to explore our terrific sport, revel in its expression of ‘natural power’, and discover their best performance as part of a really supportive international community”.

Dr. Layne Norton, a top USA Powerlifter and ambassador for the TPF, says, “We’re here in Thailand to support the newly created Thai Powerlifting Federation, and we’ve had this great opportunity to take part in a Powerlifting demonstration as well as a two-day seminar and practical program. It’s an amazing thing to represent the IPF from America, which now has an exciting new affiliate here in Thailand! Both Holly and I are big fans of the sport. I’ve been competing myself for almost ten years; it’s absolutely changed my life and I love it Thailand, if you want to compete at a high level in a drug-free environment, this is your only place to do it!”

Australian Fitness Model and social media star Holly Baxter concludes, “We’ve had chance to go through how the squat, deadlift and bench press work, and give people an idea of how the sport operates. Through the forthcoming two-day seminar and practicals, we’ve been able to attract new members, giving them the chance to begin to compete at a high level in a drug-free environment. It’s not just for big people or for guys; it’s for people of all sizes and from all backgrounds. It’s exciting to be part of this growing movement for drug-free competition, and offer an amazing platform for athletes and newcomers to get involved and experience the lifestyle which in itself is positively life-changing”.

I hope this succeds, at least with the younger generation. Everyday i come across more and more of the steroid junkies with abnormal and unreal bodies.

why do you care what they do with their own bodies?

You would be amazed how big people can get even without steroids. Not sure how much experience you yourself have with weight training but a lot is possible. Its up to people themselves to decide what they do with their body, be fat slob, a steroid junkie, a natural or whatever. Not my place to criticize up to them.

The gym around the corner has a sign in the changing room: "no shooting up on premises".  It is in English as well as Thai.  Thailand loves shortcuts.  It permeates society.

Personally, I've never understood why there aren't two different organizational bodies for all sporting events.  One organization for all sports that are performance enhancing drugs free where the participants are throughly tested and vetted, and then another organization for those athletes who want to use whatever means they chose to become the top of their sporting fields.  We could have The Olympics, The Special Olympics, and The Really, Really Special Drug Enhanced Olympics.

For powerlifting this is the case; a few federations are "tested" while all the others are not. Same for bodybuilding.

And the problem there is people who want to compete in the drug-free organizations but secretly use steroids (its easy to get around drug testing as drug testing is expensive and by chosing the right compounds there will be no trace in your blood on the drug they come collect your pee).

Main reason its not done for most other sports is that sports are depending on sponsorships. And most companies do not want to be associated with steroid use and athletes dropping like flies.

Yes its real easy to get around testing, i mean use steroids off season and your levels go back to normal and nobody would know.

I would have liked knowing about this event before it went down.

I think most sports have doping especially at the higher levels, its just that bodybuilding has it too at the lower levels

He announced it well over a month ago, but you need to follow him on FB: https://www.facebook.com/LayneNorton/

Thanks, i love IT but I don't use facebook, guess it has it drawbacks not using it.

I like to learn more about training and I already know a lot but its hard to find expert trainers around here. I am not talking about LayneNorton but events like that usually attract people with good qualifications. I have been stuck for the last couple of years on similar weights. Some people suggested it could be my training methods, personally i thought it was just end of the line for me as you can't progress indefinitely. Just wanted to find a trainer who really knows what he is talking about.

Are you becoming an anarchist in your old middle age Rob?

Personal choice and not judging others are fine. But there are many selling and pushing dangerous drugs, copies of drugs, and not bothering about consequences. And not everyone are intelligent or strong willed enough to protect themselves.

Think this specific event wouldn't have helped you much as he mostly just discussed the basics. Maybe the 2-day event had some 1:1 time included with him standing next to you and correcting your form which can be extremwly helpful. Alternatively you can look up "silent mike" on youtube who comments on videos people send in on a weekly basis (need to film yourself for 3 reps at 70% of your max from 2 angles, etc).

I hesitated if i wanted to go but instead paid membership to access a private coaching group from a bodybuilder based in chiang mai. I figured he could tell me more in 2 years than i could learn in a seminar in 1 day (at a cost of 8,000 baht for the 1-day event).

Guess you need to find a good personal trainer as it seems your issue is very specific. I can recommend you "my guy" who charges $75 an hour for a skype call, but he is mostly specialized in bodybuilding. He does know his stuff though so it might be helpful.

I know what you mean, but i believe in free choice. I hate it when that is limited because there are stupid people.  I was not promoting the buying of selling. I just don't have anything against (informed) used.

Hey Bob, my name is Jerry I'm VP of the company that ran Layne's event and also future VP of the TPF (once it's established). We're having another powerlifting seminar and workshop this weekend if you're interested. It'll be hosted by Rob Ali of Ali Training Systems Inc. He's ranked 8th in the USAPL 83KG class. I've attached the poster and agenda for his event. It's a one day workshop, Saturday or Sunday, and you'll definitely get some great value out of it that is sure to increase your lifts. https://ticketmelon.com/jcw/introtopowerliftingworkshop

Its a little bit out of the way and I am not a powerlifter, had it been in BKK I would probably have attended anyway.

Even if you're not a PL, fixing some small holes in your technique can increase the amount of weight lifted which will lead to increased muscle gains since (as I'm sure you already know) volume is the biggest contributor to mass gains. If you're interested, I can even get you a discount. Just let me know man.

Question,  where is it located. your map shows Petchabun province but your other flyer says Sathorn (Bangkok).

It is in Sathorn. The seminar portion will be held in conference rooms I and II at the Ascott Sathorn and then the lifting practical will be on the 6th floor at the Cascade Club gym.

You should look what happens when you click on map (on your site).. it sends you to a totally different province.  I will decide tonight but I think its now almost sure I will come. I did not want to come as the location showed on the map would be a 4 hour drive.  As I said I am no power lifter but I can always learn some new things. I am more a bodybuilder (also that is not really correct).

Yeah, I see what you mean about the site. Getting my team on it asap. And yeah man, you should definitely come. Even though the event is based around powerlifting, it'll be good for anyone who's interested in strength gains. We had multiple people hit PRs last weekend, and we're expecting more of the same this weekend!
