Does anyone actually know what the duty rate is.

I know many will post 'I was charged 50/60/80/100%' those posts won't really help.

Looking for what it should be.

The maximum import charge is :

1. 30% on the total value of the part as estimated by the customs department.

2. 7% VAT on that amount

3. Handling fee by customs broker.

Parts will probably be coming by Parcel Force (  Royal Mail UK ) to a Thai address, not mine, and Thai name.

Won't use any of the other int' services, heard too many horror stories.

Thanks for your post.

Where does the customs broker come into it?

With customs broker, I meant your shipping agent, either DHL, TNT Express or Thai post. When an import charge is due, they will issue a handling fee. Importing on a Thai address, on a Thai name is the safest choice. I personally have never had to pay any import charges when I shipped parts from Japan or the UK using Royal Mail or Japan Post.

I heard/read that some companies only deliver to the customs warehouse in BKK and that's where most of the charges are levied.

Though small objects I had stuff sent by RM parcel with no charges. I think they X-ray contents though and may make a difference.....

I brought a large clock in a case once from UK to LOS, when I collected it at the other end it had "fragile" sticky tape stuck all over it...

Well they estimate by themselves how much the part is worth and then levy taxes on that price. Doesn't really matter if you write that the part is worth only 300 THB.

My mum sent me some candy and chocolate, etc for Christmas and I had to pay 3,000 THB of import tax + handling fees and this was actually Thai post. The contents of the box were worth maybe 2,000 THB. I didn't accept their charges and with help from the wife I fought the case and after 3 days I received a note that since it was a gift, no taxes had to be paid.
