Prescriptions required for pain killers in Thailand (and neighboring countries)?

Recommended Posts

Is it like the USA with a doctor's prescription required for access to pain killers?

If so, would they honor a foreign prescription for that or any other medication?

Please weigh in also if you are aware of the situation in neighboring countries.

Foreign prescriptions have no validity here (though showing them may help get a script from a lical doctor).

Tramadol is sold without prescriptions as of course are NSAIDs. Opiates of any type, including codeine in even low doses, are strictly controlled and not only must be prescribed but can only be gotten from a hospital pharmacy.

Codeine preparations are sold over the counter in Cambodia.

Be advised that you need a permit to bring any opiate into Thailand with you. It is not difficult to obtain assuming the meds were prescribed. Form to request it can be found on Thai FDA narcotics division website.
