MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to set up a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was "brave and mature", and said that he was expecting a "positive outcome".

The historic summit will take place on June 12 in Singapore, in the latest twist in a high-stakes diplomatic drive by the United States to curtail Pyongyang's nuclear arms programme.

On Friday, Trump, in a complete reversal, said he would hold the meeting with Kim after initially cancelling it, citing what he called Pyongyang's "open hostility".

"I still hope that this meeting – a very brave and mature decision U.S. President Donald Trump has made, to have direct contacts with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un – will take place, and we all expect a positive outcome," Putin said in an interview with China Media Group.

Putin is due to take part in a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation later this week.

The Kremlin leader said last month that his own proposed meeting with Trump was not working out for now and was beset by problems.

Trump said in March that the two leaders would meet soon, but since then already poor ties between Washington and Moscow have deteriorated further over the conflict in Syria and the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain.

The whole world hopes that something comes out of this. We should all put partisan politics aside (yes that means YOU CNN) and wish the process well.

Wishing it well does not indicate support for Trumps other policies, it wishes well for those poor folk in NK and averting a possible nuclear gang bang.

It's a crying shame that the leader of the former Soviet Union has praise for Trump and America's press continues to try to bring him down.

Downright shameful that is.

i mean, it would be the opposite if he wasn't colluding with said leader... ?

Russia interferes with the election in favour of Trump and you see no problem with Putin praising Trump.

You're always going to praise the dog you back. Putin spent all the effort getting Trump in the White House, what else do you expect. Putin needs Trump in for 8 years. His comments work, they keep people like you believing that Trump is credible.

You don't think America 'interferes'?  Have you been to Russia?  know any Russian's?  I have and I do and they rate Putin very, very highly. Forget the 'interferes' BS and wish POTUS well for the summit!

Whether you like Trump or not it is in the worlds best interest that the summit succeeds. Personally I don't like the megalomaniac Trump but that is irrelevant.

Why are we even listening to Putin?  The guy lies constantly.  From his ventures into the Ukraine/Crimea, to meddling in US/western elections, to murders of his political opponents, to Russian athletes doping, etc.  Putin denies all charges.  In fact, I can only think of one guy who lies more than Putin.  That's right, Trump.  It figures these guys would be fond of each other.
