I would say in IDC you don't have access to anything. If you end up there and no-one knows you are there you are on your own until you can find a way, say through a visitor to another inmate, to get your friends aware of the fact. No money for fine or air ticket, throw the book at him, perhaps he will think next time. yes you can be arrested one day overdue you're mate paid on exit i suspect or voluntarily at immo and wasn't caught whilst in the country. 2 different things had he had a passport check in those 10 days for any reason he'd be in the same position as the OPs mate. Desperate people running away from crimes, food, and hunger in Central America are trying to make their and their family's life better by illegally entering the USA in contrast to privileged people born in rich countries (winning a genetic lottery) are overstaying (and possibly working also) in Thailand for vacationing. If on ed visa in Oz and overstay or fail to respond to e-mails, calls etc., or don't attend school (every day of absence reported by mid morning direct to Imm. dept.,), or continued very poor grades and no quick improvement and your on an aircraft very very quickly, I'm aware of cases of non-attend classes and no attempt to contact the uni / school the Imm. officers quickly searched and found the person, helped them pack their bags right away and escorted to the airport. A collection was made on one of the smaller Pattaya fora for enough money to pay his fine and buy a ticket. There are rules and they are fairly administered. An entry stamp when entering through a border in Thailand clearly indicates the date when one is to leave or before the departure stamp date to make other arrangements to extend ones stay. There is absolutely no reason to resort to corruption to support a stay in Thailand and AFAIK there is probably no other country in the world where it would be legal for one to overstay an entry visa without consequences. As with tax, the onus is on the individual to be aware of his personal responsibility for ensuring the rules are followed. They might have plans to travel to another country other than the one they came from.
