DSI identifies a BKK bombings suspect

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) disclosed that an additional suspect of the bombings in Bangkok and neighbouring Nonthaburi on New Year’s Eve has been identified, thanks to the state-of-the-art photographic technology.

The officials got hold of the footage where the suspect was at the parking lot in Seacon Square Shopping Center. However, the DSI has not invited the suspect to the department for interrogation yet.

Mr. Sunai Manomai-udom, the DSI director-general, however stated that the images from the security camera could not yet confirm whether the suspect was directly involved with the incident, and more evidence and witnesses have to be gathered.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Charnchai Likhitjittha revealed that the DSI has spotted three suspects from the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), and two of them are men and the other is a woman. However, the images have clearly captured the facial appearance on one suspect.

He further stated that the suspect is a civilian with heavy criminal records, and the person is also trying to get away from the police at the moment.

It could have something to do with the translation SJ... you know only too well that the Thais do not like to offend people, so maybe the original wording meant something slightly different?

Video may show 3 bombing suspects

Department of Special Investigation found three new suspects behind Bangkok bombings from tapes taken from closed circuit television networks monitoring the areas struck on New Year's Eve, Justice Ministry said Thursday.

Justice Minister Charnchai Likhitjitta said two of the three are male and one is female. One already has a criminal record and has been on the run, Mr Charnchai said.

The information released by Mr Charnchai matched an earlier briefing by DSI chief Sunai Manomai-udom in a radio interview Thursday morning.

DSI hones in on suspects from security camera tapes

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has singled out images of three suspects in the New Year bombings in Bangkok using security camera footage taken at CentralWorld Plaza that police had already analysed. Justice Minister Charnchai Likhitjitta said the DSI spotted two suspicious men and one woman on footage from a security camera.

After sketching one of the men and cross-checking the picture with criminal records, the DSI found he had been charged in a criminal case before but had escaped.

Sketches of the other two suspects will be sent overseas for identification using equipment unavailable in Thailand. He said the tapes the DSI team examined were the same as those previously analysed by the police. He denied the DSI had a secret security camera.

Why don't the police arrest the suspects for interrogation? Before the knew it the suspect have already fled to bordering Lao or Cambodia.

The word "invite" is a rather ominous word in Thailand. Our Thai boss once "invited" some of us to do something. A few declined the "invitation" and were promptly dismissed!

I learned a valuable lesson that day. When someone "invites" you, you better say yes! (Unless your someone important--which I am not).

DSI Director General affirms his agents did not distribute images of bomb suspects to press members

The Director General of the Department of Special Investigations affirms that circulated pictures of the suspects in the Bangkok and Nonthaburi bombings were not leaked by DSI agents.

The Director General of the Department of Special Investigations, Mr. Sunai Manomai-adul (สุนัย มโนมัยอุดม), revealed that the pictures of the Bangkok and Nonthaburi bomber suspects printed on the front page of major newspapers today (February 2) were not circulated by DSI agents. Mr. Sunai said he had questioned the agents investigating the case and none are likely to have passed on the picture to the press.

He said that DSI officials required sophisticated software to further clarify the surveillance camera images of suspects obtained from Seacon Square Department Store and would have the images ready within 1 week. The director-general said that the Crime Suppression Police Division also possessed pictures of the bomber suspects.

Mr. Sunai said that the Bangkok and Nonthaburi bombing case should be classified as a Special Investigation case so that DSI agents can utilize their full investigative capabilities in the matter.

The Director-General added that if police apprehended the suspects first there were obliged to share investigative information with the Department of Special Investigations according to a prior agreement.

Thai investigators are reopening the possibility Muslim militants from the far south might have planted bombs in Bangkok that killed three people on New Year's Eve, a top Justice Ministry official said on Friday.

Sunai Manomai-udom, head of the mnistry's Department of Special Investigation (DSI), said a man caught on a security camera near one of the places hit was also a suspect in a series of bank bombs in the three southernmost provinces.

"We think it's him," Sunai told Channel 3 television.

He named the man as Thawansak Jehna, for whom an arrest warrant was issued in October in connection with bombs in the Muslim-majority southern province of Yala.

Sunai said police and DSI investigators had spotted Thawansak, along with another man and a woman, on security video from a mall where a bomb hidden in a tube of potato chips had been defused.

In the immediate aftermath of the blasts, the army-installed government ruled out militants from the far south, where 2,000 people have died in a three-year separatist campaign of shootings and bombings.

Instead, they inferred that Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted in a Sept. 19 military coup, or elements in the police and army still loyal to him were behind the attacks.

Thaksin, a former police officer, has denied any links to the bombs, which also wounded 38 people and sent shockwaves through the country.

Sunai also told a Bangkok radio station the DSI had asked Interpol for help in identifying the other two suspects on the tape.

Last week, police released without charge a group of 19 people -- a mixture of police, military and civilians -- detained seven days earlier on suspicion of involvement.

23 Yala banks hit by bomb blasts

The bombs, mostly left on bank counters and some in ATM booths at the banks, were detonated mostly by clocks. Twenty six people suffered minor injuries. The militants, disguised as students, planted the home-made bombs inside the banks hours before the blasts.

Thawansak Paenae was allegedly caught in security footage by a CCTV system at the Bangkok Bank (BBL) in Betong district. He carried bomb hidden in handbag.

At least 1,300 people have been killed since unrest broke out in January 2004 in Yala , Pattani and Narathiwat provinces. After ousting Thaksin in a coup last September, junta leader Sonthi Boonyaratglin and Surayud Chulanont launched a raft of peace efforts in southern Thailand.

Surayud Chulanont said. "Don't make a too quick judgement before the investigation concludes on whether the southern unrest has intensified and moved to Bangkok."

Earlier in the evening, bombs had gone off at six locations across the city, from about 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Twenty-five people were injured and three later died at hospitals from their injuries.

The biggest toll was at Victory Monument, where 17 people were injured, two of them dying from their injuries. Other targets were a police booth at Saphan Kwai intersection, where two people were injured, and a market in Khlong Toei, where three people were injured, one fatally.

At Seacon Square shopping mall, a bomb was found in a trash can inside the mall and taken to the parking lot, where it exploded without injuring anyone. Police booths on Sukhumvit Soi 62 and in suburban Nonthaburi were also hit, but there were no injuries.

The bombs used in Bangkok, like those in the South, comprised high-powered explosives and ammonium nitrate stuffed in body spray cans and wired to 9V batteries and Casio watches.

Footage from security camera at a shopping complex showed that Thawansak was key suspect for placing time bomb in Bangkok.

Mr Thawansak Paenae was allegedly caught in security footage by a CCTV system at mobile phone shop in Seacon Square shopping mall.

He was among the three suspects whom DSI believe could be involved in the deadly bombing waves in Bangkok. He has been charged in a criminal case but had escaped.
