CityNews – Tobacco farmers have filed a petition after the Tobacco Authority of Thailand announced it would cease all purchasing for three years.

On June 28th, over 300 tobacco farmers and entrepreneurs rallied at the City Hall to file a petition to the Ministry of Finance regarding an announcement by the Government that the Tobacco Authority of Thailand will not purchase any tobacco from farmers for the next three years.

Don't worry guys I have feeling a better   smokable crop will be on the market very soon

Wow, just ruin hundreds if lively hoods at the drop of a hat due to bad planning. ? Looks like there will be tonnes of tobacco on the black market then.

This is what happens when you steak your livelihood on a monocrop ,

you are at the mercy of the markets or in this case the Tobacco Authority.

Maybe the tobacco farmers could sell their product to the rubber farmers, who could sell their product to the rice farmers, who could sell their product to the tobacco farmers.

And then all three groups could end up asking the government for money or market interventions to bail them out.

Are the guys in uniforms really trying to say that the hike in tobacco taxes has left them such with a large back inventory of tobacco that they won't need any more for THREE YEARS?   Really???

"The reason they gave was due to the fact that sales of tobacco products has dropped after a tax hike in September 2017. This has left the government with stockpiles of tobacco they wish to use up before purchasing more"

This action is indicative of the current government, refusing to buy produce that nobody wants.

B'stards, I tell you, abosolute B'stards.

2 questions

why they stop to buy? Less people smoking or enough reserves or buying elsewhere ?

second is , why they petition city hall? How is that going to help ?

New tax rules came into effect, which meant that excise tax is calculated on the sales price and no longer on the production/import price. The reason was that foreign brands just imported the tobacco products really cheap on paper. The goals were more tax revenue and better market position of local state owned brands.

The unintended result was that some foreign brands just decided to drastically reduce their retail price. Imported Camel for instance is now cheaper than local crap cigarettes, and Thai Tobacco is seeing its market share rapidly vanishing.

Time to change crops to supply high quality smokeables and  edibles, inline with the new decriminalization of pot in Thailand.

"steak" (stake) Not one to mince words, are we?.  (My usual go-to excuse is Gffgle spell schecker) But an inconsiderately stupid announcement by the government.  Could have given them  2 or 3 years notice.  Financial ruin for some, that's for sure.

In a year or two all the cigarettes made in Thailand are going to be produced with tobacco from years ago? Stale smokes aren't gonna sell very well I'm thinking.

So the list of Thai crops down the toilet so far are:- Rice, Rubber, Pineapples and now Tobacco.

Makes me wonder what they expect the farmers to plant next?

Or are the government just driving all the small farmers into bankruptcy so they can buy up the land cheap?

The Chinese buy up most of the tobacco available in Thailand.  This seams to be someones game....

Has Uncle Somchai finally got that licence to officially import vaping equipment?

Don't believe anyone should lose sleep about damage to tobacco industry.

Amazing how so many rush to defend the indefensible if it involves thai bashing

Don't you love the Thai tobacco farmers, they are just trying to make

a living.

I'm amazed that no-one has said they will soon bounce back along with the rubber farmers.

Remove the tax and sell it to the Chinese at cost. Put the farmers back to work with no loss. The tax will still be collected but with the new crop.
