Serious price increase on cheese in big C

I wouldn't buy a local product that is near the cost of higher quality imported products. I buy St Dalfour jam, which hasn't gone up much in many years.

Big C jams are not local made,if that's what you were referring to ,they are made by

Bonne maman,a well known French jam maker,for Big C.

there are very few products that have not had a price rise

for years, in fact i cannot think of one,but know many that have,which is most.

Me too. Only with local fruits and when they are cheap (in season).

Similar with fruit juices last year. About the time the wine prices increased, certain fruit juices spiked in price (notably, grape which is in any case an exotic fruit for Thailand). Wasn't sure whether it was to dissuade people from home-brewing,  or because people actually *had* started buying loads of it (perhaps for home-brewing), so it made a good farang tax point. Either way, the prices didn't seem to stick. Within 2 weeks, there were 3 for 2 pricings which made it cheaper than previously. Oddly, dried goods - beans, lentils and the like - spiked too. All rather too obviously stuff that the Thai don't consume in any quantity.

You think that Makro has a exception to the Import tax?  buying volume does come out a bit cheaper but not much.

I pulled up Thai Tesco online and while I am sure the cheese is of a better quality and while I am at it, I am sure Big C has a better deal. However using it as a baseline. This is the same price difference as when I started buying Makro cheese, 8 years back.

And many vegetables are considerably more expensive than they were not long ago... 

Could literally buy the same basket of stuff cheaper in the UK or Europe now than here

I will take a look next time there , sometimes as a break from cheddar I buy a whole Edam , last time at Makro Maesai 2 locals at the checkout as my wife what the big red ball was , she said cheese , I was expecting  ' What is  cheez '.  The cheese I loved in England was Maarsdammer ........................... sorry mate , going off on one now , sigh.

I might add that these articles are not the ones the average Thai is buying everyday so the price hike mainly hits foreigners / expats.
I can remember there were out cries when the price of eggs had gone up.
I think the government stepped in and now there is a price regulation in order.

What I still don't understand that some type of Thai rice (Jasmine / Hom Mali in good quality) is cheaper in Europe than in Thailand.

Thanks but save your typing skills on me, I have no idea what the price difference between all the places I do know it is expensive for the amount you get!

I do my cheese shopping at Costco at home, I bring back blocks.

There has been a big increase in international dairy prices. This is why the cheese price has gone up. I make my own. Can get raw milk from local dairy coop @ 20 baht per litre. Ten litre makes 1Kg  cheese. Cheap and much better than the supermarket cheese.

Don't forget to check out the reduced priced items in the fridge section. Quite often, because Thais are not big cheese users, you will find cheese coming to its use by date and heavily discounted. Have bought mainland cheese from Big C on several occasions for 40-60B. Bought several last time,  kept one out for consumption and put the rest in the freezer, not the same when it comes out, however is OK for making cheese dishes. Keep in mind cheese has a long shelf life if stored correctly. Cheers

After reading all these , as I said about 5 pages back ' I had to have a cheese sandwich '.

The price label can still be read . 399B for a 2k block. This was from Makro , I don't recall seeing any of the Lotus cheese being reduced.  Cheese

Do not buy cheese at Big C , very expensive.

I use Siambury here in Pattaya, they import cheese 50-70% cheaper than Big C,    2-300 baht for a kilo .

Rough estimate they sell about five or more types of Parmesan both bagged and block. The blocked is the real deal, but you do pay for that.

 

If you cook a bit likely you know these things already. Interestingly the difference, the ratio, is still the same as it was 10 years ago, while inflation has pushed up prices all around, the ratio between Makro cheese prices and other stores remains the same. Makro is also good for certain vege's, fresh & frozen fish and shellfish, if you live upcountry.

 

As for the OP, just Brits and Aussies getting on a price bender       The guys in my local argue endlessly over where you can buy cheaper or if you bought something, invariably they bought it cheaper, somewhere. I reckon it’s cultural. I do piss them off (American usage here) when I laugh at all their caterwauling bull.

I don't think that many people, those who maybe don't travel out of Thailand much, realise just how expensive many things are in Thailand. I go to Spain where not only are prices of most food stuffs lower but they are of far higher quality. And don't get me started on the price of beer there - 10 baht a can in the supermarket. And wine is so cheap they have an annual festival where they chuck it over each other, Songkran style.

Very true. Thailand is extremely expensive for many things - not just imported ones - and Mediterranean countries and even the UK are frequently cheaper, sometimes much cheaper.

I can get a very nice three-course lunch in Portugal for less than one would cost on Soi Buakow, even without including wine.
