Serious price increase on cheese in big C

Mainland Epicure is their extra-vintage cheese and the top of the range. If you think that's rubber you either haven't tried it or you're taste is all over the place.

Personally I find Cathedral City Extra Mature is nicer than the NZ product and only slightly more expensive.

Damn , starting to get hungry , cheese sandwiches now for breakfast .

I tried bulk when oz cheddar was selling at a store for silly 1kg price but was sleep walking to the fridge at all hours craving it so it didnt work out

  • Sounds like 'Mainland cheddar' to me. I like the vintage cheddar version, the rest taste like rubber.

Big C recently had it on 'sale' at 186 so I bought a couple of them. I like it as cheese on toast and get a couple of meals out of it plus a bit left over to chew on. I set a mental limit of 100 baht

Easy to get and useless.

I always show it but I guess you need xx'xxx Baht shopping per month to profit?

Never ever got any response from them.

Different from Tesco or TOPS.

My first shopping at MAKRO was in 2011 or 2012.

No card, no problem.

How long can you store a 2kg block before it starts to mould in a fridge?

I never liked the Aussie or NZ cheeses much, overpriced too much like eating rubber!  Check out Villa Supermarket that have UK cheese nearly half the price such as Cathedral brand 250g for 199THB or Iceland brand 400g for 229THB, both come in resealable bags and taste better as well.

As above somewhere .   When I had 2 , 2k blocks at the very low price ( about 300B for 2k ) I was chucking out things from the fridge that were taking up too much room , the last of one of these blocks is going blue round the edge but it improves the flavour ( I have convinced myself ) ,if I ever get too many blocks I have thought of burying one in the garden for 2 months , very little temp. change and in the dark.

This is dating me ... I think you get a guest number first - save your receipts. If you buy over 1500 Baht in a month, you get a card - Good God that was from 9 years ago so .... better check what they do now.

Depends on what you eat .... and where you live, heh, ... I shop at makro for; olive oil, pasta, spices in quantity. meats both fresh or frozen. and cheese obviously, plus a few odds and ends ...  ..... if you make food yourself it is good, if you are mainly buying take out, not so much. I don't know if price wise it is or isn't and advantage but they stock things that the other stores do not .... or a larger selection of ... so for me it is a great place.

Today is my Thai day. Going to pick up CowKaMu and quitiao (sp?) bed - uh duck noodles at the local, Its not like I cook everyday, but I like to have Western food at least 2 days a week, its a good change of pace and the G Friend likes pasta too, so

At my local supermarket, 1 kg of Mainland tasty cheese is currently $12.49 which is about 281 baht - so the New Zealand price for a New Zealand-made product is (as you would expect) MUCH LOWER than the price in Thailand.  The Vintage variety has been out of stock in New Zealand since late last year so any stock available in Thailand has probably been on the shelves or in a warehouse / in storage for rather a long time.

"...any stock available in Thailand has probably been on the shelves or in a warehouse / in storage for rather a long time".

Garbage, why do people like you post such crap?

I got some from Tops, Sukhumvit, last night, packed on date is 27/3/18, best before 22/12/18, nothing unacceptable about those dates. B199 per pack, Vintage and there was plenty of it.

Not to hijack the thread, but all farang groceries/product prices, over the last year seem to have jumped.  Here's my weekly Big C tab, a bit higher than normal, weekly is usually around 3kB, used to be closer to 2kB +/-   3 of us in the house, fruit and veg bought at local market.

With the Baht strengthening so much over the last 12 months. You would think imported products would be coming down in price.

I live in the UAE as well as Thailand. I am paid what they call a Goods and Services Differential. The cost of living difference based on certain products between the US and the UAE. This is reviewed every 6 months. The cost of living in the UAE has risen 6% in the last 6 months. Partly because they introduced VAT at 5% even on food which i find the ultimate in pure greed.

Must be greedy retailers in Thailand i guess. Or maybe the increase in the oil price. This effects everything. The cheese is way over priced in the UAE as well.

Disagree on that referring to the Homeland brand.

They have different sorts from rubber to stone hard.

Two year and three year aged cheese is strong and can even be used to grate with pasta etc.

Went to tops supermarket here in chiang rai a few weeks ago and they had my favorite cheese . Needless to say , i brought 6 packets, went back a few weeks later and it was gone . The trouble with tops is that when an item runs out it takes weeks to get it back in .

Doing our weekly shop yesterday and the Mrs noted we only had half a block of cheese remaining. Head to the cheese section and the cheese we buy has been increased upto 220 baht I think it was. Shock and dismay at this, this is nearly 40 baht increase from an avg price of 170/185 baht over the last 3 years.

It's the most popular brand comes in different strengths red/blue etc. Looks like a typical English cheese. Is a cheddar and a decent cheese for here.

I am sorry to say but I could not buy it the increase was just outrageous.

I see some nookie bear guy selling double the size (1kg) for 200 baht but he's in nong khai. I am tempted to buy bulk.

"Shock, dismay, outrage..".

Really?...for a small increase in the price of an imported item that is comparatively expensive to start with?  Unbelievable.  But then you are comparing prices over 3 years!  Why not go back even further, say 10 years, and feel even more shocked and dismayed at the outrageous increase of a few baht?

You don't need a card anymore to shop at Makro.

if you are bickering over a slice of 200 baht cheese,

then i suggest spend lady drinks to whomever so wants

at the nearest go-go den for a couple of hours.

i promise when times up,

you wont be ailing over a 200 baht cost per day ever again

Not seen Jarlsberg for years , I can't even remember where I saw it. I do get one or two things in Tops when out that way but not those 1" cubes of Edam for about 90B.

Might have to go to Dutch cheese on youtube for my food porn.

You think that Makro has a exception to the Import tax?  buying volume does come out a bit cheaper but not much.

The price of that Mainland brand cheddar from New Zealand has gone up around 30 to 40 baht at every store that I can see.. not only Big C. Tops, Gourmet Market...

If you want cheese at decent prices, I suggest trying Foodland.

FWIW, even here in New Zealand where the cheese comes from, the price of Mainland cheese recently went up also.  A 1kg block of Mainland Tasty cheddar now runs $NZ12.49 which is about 280 baht.  (And if that sounds cheap compared to what you pay for the same product in Thailand, only a few weeks ago it was $10.99 for the 1 kg pack!)  The Vintage has been out of stock since late last year - but should be back in stock this month.

That probably explains the price hike in Thailand too. So the price in NZ went up 25 percent based on what you said. and here it went from 180 baht to about 220 baht for 200 grams (18% hike).

I managed to find Mainland Tasty for 186 at my new Tesco mini supermarket that opened in Somdet at the weekend. Expires end of the year, so bought three to add to the couple I already have. As pointed out by someone above it isn't something you should eat a huge amount of (fat), and my five packs will keep me going for three-four months.

Have tracked food expenditures by category for about a year now. Two biggest surprises?

Dairy products (incl eggs) can add up (15% of purchases)

Condiments (cooking oil, sauces, spices, etc.) can as well. (13% of purchases)

so now make my own Blackberry,Raspberry,Mango, and Peach, cost 20-40 THB

a jar, dont like Cheese so price rise not a problem, but inflation is rising much

more than the Governments supposed 1%.

One needs to consider the price increase over many years to get a true idea of what's fair or not. Sometimes items will remain the same price for years.

I wouldn't buy a local product that is near the cost of higher quality imported products. I buy St Dalfour jam, which hasn't gone up much in many years.

Actually , tops has  delicate cheese fridge now. I do not care about the price , I like cheese . And they are getting in salami as well. Love it .

Im sure that within a few weeks  the cheese price will drop again  as less is sold with the current  increase

About  6 weeks ago  the price of Orchid butter  227 grams  went overnight from 95baht to 125 baht ,as the weeks passed  priced was reduced to 114 baht  ,and now to 104 baht   in all main supermarkets   guess people just decided price  hike too much

a topic about cheese and lots of comments about Cheddar. I don't see the link between those 2.

That caroline dairy products are becoming a good alternative here to imported items / brands.
I can remember a few years ago there were no local cheese or dairy products available at all.
Started with Yolida yogurt, then they had sour cream, cream and butter.
Now cheddar, cream cheese and mozzarella from Caroline.
They also make 3 kinds of delicious yogurt in 500g cup. Altough it is not available at Big C yet where I do my regular shopping.
Some Tops branches have them.

If you consider cheese as a treat, the price won't hurt you.

Considering the body volume/weight of many farangs here, they don't.
