A controversy over cracks in the runway at Bangkok's new airport has prompted three senior members of Thailand's airports corporation to leave the company.

Just nine months into his post, Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya has submitted his resignation.

Two other senior executives have been sacked by the company in the wake of the crisis at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which opened in September.

Engineering reports have so far revealed a total of almost 100,000 squares metres, or about 5 per cent of the tarmac has been affected by cracks or subsidence.

The terminal has also been beset by leaks, cracked tiling and broken toilet bowls.

There are allegations that subcontractors have used substandard materials in the construction of the airport as a consequence of bribery and corruption.

Under pressure from the military junta to resolve the issues, The Airports of Thailand is running three separate investigations.
