Erosion Crisis In Nakhon And Other Southern Coastal Provinces

Featured Replies

The Nation and MCOT both posted articles about erosion problems in Nakhon.

Heavy seas and wave action have caused serious erosion along stretches of the South coast of the Gulf of Thailand, according to the Marine Resources and Lower Gulf Coast Research Centre.

Director Supot Chantrapornsilp said yesterday that since last November coastal areas of the south gulf provinces had suffered erosion due to the unusually harsh monsoon.

The most-damaged areas are Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla and Pattani. In each province, stretches of shore ranging between five kilometres and 40 kilometres have been washed away.

Laem Talumphuk in Nakhon Si Thammarat experienced erosion along a 44-kilometre stretch of coastline.

The Marine and Coastal Resources Department and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry have engaged a consultant to study ways to stop further erosion

His Majesty the King has expressed concern.

Royal Development Projects Board secretary-general Sompol Panmanee said His Majesty had asked for long-term solutions.

His Majesty's Private Affairs Division officials are inspecting damage and will recommend remedial action and provide residents with aid granted by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, Sompol said.

We've also had terrible erosion on Koh Phangan but I always assumed it was caused by lack of planning and forethought with the construction of a jetty/harbor that has changed the currents.
