My mother just visited and aged in late 70s. She is a bit overweight now and her arms are holding a bit of weight- more than Ive seen before. I noticed yesterday her skin color looked kind of purple color - arms and legs. Tonight she was wearing a tight watch and her hand was extremely purple looking. Is this just a blood circulation issue or something more? She is known to have  a few drinks with meals. Unsure if its anything serious. But yesterday I was worried about her skin color all over as Ive never seen it that bad.

What sort of blood tests should she have?

thanks

She needs to be evaluated for possible venous insufficiency as well as cardiovascular disease. Blood tests per se are not likely to be very helpful. I would suggest she consult a cardiologist - and avoid wearing tight watches.

If heart checks out OK next stop would be a vascular surgeon (not that she needs surgery, but these are the specialists who treat vascular disease). They will likely do doppler ultrasound to assess the blood vessels.

Does she have any known chronic diseases? On any medications?

Sheryl, who would you recommend as a good cardiologist in Bangkok. A friend of mine is having similar aliments to the OP's mum although it is mainly thru the arrival of large clusters of spider veins around her ankles & legs. Some of these are blue in discoloration . Doctors have said nothing to worry about but that is not fo much help.

To the OP hope you can get your mum sorted I know it can cause a fair amount of anxiety, good luck.

Prof. Taworn  Suithichaiyakul, US trained (UCLA). He is on the faculty at Chula but also has private hours once a week at Bangkok Christian Hospital and at Sukhumvit Hospital.

At BCH I think his hours are Saturday morning but their website is only in Thai so need to cal to check.  Spell out his whole name when yo udo as there are two Dr. taworns there in cardiology.

At Sukhumvit Hospital it is Saturday afternoons. http://www.sukumvithospital.com/en_doctorprofile.php?id=32

However spider veins per se  are nto an indication of cardiac disease. They are similiar to varicose veins (but involve smaller veins and are more superficial) and causes are usually aging and, often, obesity.  Use of compression stockings and elevating the legs at rest, and weight loss, will all help. They do not require treatment unless they bother the person cosmetically. In which case usual treatment is sclerotherapy. Should be evaluated for varicose veins at the same time. http://www.yanhee.net/varicose-veins/doctors

If these spider veins are the only symptom she probably does not need to see a cardiologist.
