webfact
Domestic violence a serious offence, not just family matter, says Justice office By The Nation FILE photo Every day, domestic violence hurts five children and women. The problem has seemingly surged lately, with statistics showing domestic violence soared by 83.6 per cent between January and March this year. Victims are spouses, parents, siblings, children, adopted children, grandparents and in-laws. The Office of Justice Affairs on Sunday released infographics to underline the problem and recommend ways to solve it. It encouraged family members to travel and to do activities together, promote family pride, speak with understanding, have good attitudes towards one another and show mutual respect. “But if domestic violence still happens, seek help from relevant authorities and alert police,” the guidance emphasises. It also encouraged neighbours to take action if they notice domestic violence in their areas. “Do not think it’s a family matter. When violence occurs, victims need help and police can intervene,” the advice notes. It suggested that victims could also seek help from doctors or state hospitals. Although it is common for family members to quarrel, things should never escalate into violence, according to the Office of Justice Affairs. Domestic violence is punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a fine of Bt6,000. In some cases, offenders may also be punished under the criminal laws. Domestic violence is sometimes associated with other behaviours such as gambling, brawling, drug abuse and alcohol addiction. Popular Post Samui Bodoh
Domestic violence a serious offence, not just family matter, says Justice office Actually, it is a crime. Until you call it a crime, loudly for all to hear, and take demonstrable action against it, nothing much will change. Instead of a press release and 'infographics' , why not give in-depth training to the police and instruct them to deal with it as it should be dealt with, as an assault. I applaud the fact that there is a story on this issue at all, but (respectfully), there needs to be more done. "...Every day, domestic violence hurts five children and women..." Wouldn't it be nice if that didn't occur?
Popular Post Lungstib
If you beat up a stranger on the street it can result in very serious charges with many years in prison if convicted. Beat up the woman in the kitchen or the kid watching TV and its considered a "domestic" which the police dont want to deal with. Does a marriage certificate really make this much difference?

Surely that must mean per village at the very least. It's a common, accepted part of the culture that occurs frequently in rural Thailand. It isn't hidden behind closed doors. Everyone knows about it and it adds something to gawk or gossip about, even laugh at it, that's it. The next generation is conditioned that it is normal and proper thing they should also do.

Khun Paul
Any assault is a criminal Offence from Actual Bodily Harm to Murder with degrees in between ( GBH, GBH with Intent, Attempted Murder, manslaughter, Murder etc ) here the problem is that the POLICE have not been trained and have no clue, plus investigating Domestic Abuse does not appear on the radar of Criminal offences and plus it makes no cash for the officer. Sad but true, the number of times I have been told abolut men hiotting women and some of them are Police officers, then you can see why it is not taken seriously, it is inbred in to the culture. Men are No1, Women second class. How many FEMALE Police generals are there ????? Edited July 30, 2018 by Khun Paul adding a sentence

Popular Post spidermike007
Real men do not beat up their wives, or their children. They protect their families, they do not harm them. Only a man child, a reprobate, a super freak, a half worm, and a sociopath beats up his family. Jail is the appropriate penalty, and the fellow inmates will devote special attention to a half man who beat up his family. He will get all the attention he deserves in the slammer. And real men who perform their jobs on the judiciary convict men like these. Otherwise, they are not men at all. Just posers. thaichiro
And most women never go to the authorities out of embarrassment or fear of family reprisals. The figure is huge, not only here but around the world. The U.N. Should make this a priority, but they would rather focus on the effects than the cause. Give the men canings in the town square regularly and you’ll see a turnaround in Somchai’s behaviour. Of course giving the victims refuge and resources would go hand in hand with this. Popular Post from the home of CC
I had a small supermarket near Krabi years back and would notice after the weekend so many women would come into my store with black eyes and such. My wife would have to sell goods to the husbands when they came in later cause I couldn't stand them being in the store. Although despising it as much as I, my wife would just say ' village life '. Drastic changes are needed but I don't see this forthcoming anytime soon. Some people do to others what they witnessed as children, self perpetuating misery one generation to the next. And with the state of education such as it is...... 3
barefootbangkok
I worked for CPS for a year so have seen a lot of family violence. When I first came to Bkk, I saw a guy with a couple friends beating on his gf at the BTS Phrom Phong area, laughing the whole time. Called the tourist police and then the regular BIB. They laughed and told me to mind my own business. I don't think attitudes have changed much since then.

Barnet
I am not sure of the stats involved here. I am no expert on any of it but as a guess I'd say both Thai men and women resort to violence due to their inability to talk things through rationally like we do in the west. There are very few creditable outlets to discuss issues. There is no remedial service available. Families and friends stick together and can't see things for what they actually are. Add to this a freak show of an upbringing in regards to handling your problems emotions or when to keep your mouth shut and the result is a pressure cooker waiting to go off. Women are equally if not more spiteful than men in domestic disagreements. The difference is STILL, that a woman can slap a man in the face both at home and in public and it is seen as an action that carries a potential reason for happening. Should a man slap a woman in the same situation and he would likely be arrested and charged as a domestic abuser. If the public were to watch both actions occur it would be interesting to see the difference in response.

The Thai police usually ignore domestic violence reports (from men or women) until someone is stabbed or killed. Although after a severe beating I have seen a Thai policeman offer to watch while they pack their bags, then escort the victim to the bus station. Sir Dude
Domestic violence is serious issue and those guilty of it should face the full force of the law as it's no different than assaulting anyone else. Crimes of passion to those that people are familiar with/or not for that matter, does not excuse you from not being about to control yourself. As is often said, familiarity breeds contempt in many situations (not all though obviously)...but that is not an excuse. Voodoochile
Though not perfect (nobody is) I wish we had more world leaders like Trump especially in dying Europe. He has two things which are endagered umongst all men not just politicians and that is................... BALLS and CONVICTIONS. Remember all the hate you have spewed at this man you don't realize what you have until it's gone and I get the feeling that soon enough you will realize your mistakes and wish he was still your leader.
