Can't imagine why the items to bring BKK would be any different from the ones you would bring going to any other city?....(except Moscow in winter I would imagine, cloths wise).

OP, what are you going to be doing in Bkk and how long are you staying for?

It makes a difference to what you should bring, or not bring.

In 2004 I brought:-

The tools of my trade (laptop and a lot of previous project documentation).

Business suit (worn once).

Regular smart casual office wear.

My (Thai) wife brought:-

500kg of "essentials" mostly clothes.

In the years since we have amassed, a house (ok it's Madam's), two cars (mine), two dogs (mine when they misbehave) and assorted creatures.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

When I came over, I brought a hand coffee grinder, aeropress, and some

fresh coffee beans so I would have great coffee on day one. Still use it to this day.

A return ticket back to wherever you're coming from. Oh, and real Q-tips.

In 2008 I brought pretty much the same.  I took the hard drives out of all my desktop computers and brought them, then bought a new desktop when I got here to put them in.

The only thing I didn't bring was a wife.

While the responses so far are mostly humorous, you must realize your question is really unanswerable.  Where are you coming from? How long do you expect to be here? What things do you consider essential? What will you be doing here?

Whatever you bring will be potentially subject to Thai Customs inspection and possible duty to pay.

Virtually everything you "need" is available here but, depending on your size and your quality demands, it's probably best to bring all the clothes you'll need for awhile until you figure out where to source new clothes in Bangkok.

Other than that it's impossible to say what you might need. As someone else pointed out, if you're shifting here for employment, you really ought to be up to the task of figuring out what things you need to bring. If you're coming here to retire, your requirements would be different especially if you're closing down a home in your country.

If you've just decided to get a tourist visa and come here to take up long term residence because it sounds like it would be fun,  your stay here is probably going to be more short-term than you think.

Insect repellent! Mosquitoes, ants, cockroaches .... Mosquitoes can make you really sick.

Medical face masks -- if you're going to use public transportation. Many Thais will cough right in your face (I'm Thai too, don't get me wrong, but I cover my mouth when coughing) or in the air. I got bad upper-respiratory infection twice after visiting Thailand years ago.

Medication

Hand sanitizer

Light clothes - shorts, cotton shirts

A very encouraging post for anyone considering coming to Thailand.......makes it sound like a famine ravaged African country which it's far from!

Jailai, seriously!

You don't want to get sick on your trip or your move. Give your body a chance to adjust to the new environment - including germs and such.

Just one year after moving to the US, I got US Flu putting me down for the whole month with no voice!

Then over a decade in the US, going back home and got so sick like a dog 'cause the body  doesn't recognize the germs there anymore.

I'll be moving back to Thailand very soon and will arm myself with all I said above -- no bad attitude! Just be prepared!

I have noticed a lot of Thais ( and Asians in general ) get sick very easily,  they appear to have poor immune systems.

I don't know exactly who got sick easily than whom. Getting sick or not, the choice is yours. So, enjoy your stay!

It's quite clear, it says who gets sick easily?? It was not a comparisson, just an observation.

I'm enjoying my stay ( mostly ).

I hope you adjust well when you come back.

Don't bring your wife.

There's actually a Thai song titled 'don't bring your wife' (pok mia mai dui)

I suppose your mummy and daddy will be doing the packing as no adult would ask such a question. If you don’t know what to pack them why are you moving here?

You can buy almost everything you need to live fairly well here in Bangkok.  It's not like you were going to Kinshasa or a small village in the Amazon.

That said, the quality of many things here may not be what you're used to at home, and they might be much more expensive.  Bring what you think you can't do without.  For example, I brought fishing gear.  I can buy it here, but the quality and price are not as good as at home.

If you have favorite food products you just have to have, specific to your own country, bring some of that.  Then explore when you're here and make a list of things you need to buy on your next trip back home.

yeah it can be a choice of either bringing 'all' or 'nothing' but the kitchen sink!

for example:

The only thing I didn't consider bringing was a complete spare replacement Front Fork (Rake) for my road treddlie!

Got smashed into by a local, who was naturally not going to give way to a cyclist...

The reality of this repair/replacement was that one cannot get a local replacement for these Forks, as falang and asian bike have different dimensions for these components (up at the head)

My Post is sort of highlighting the 'how long is a piece of string' aspect of asking such a wide ranging question! ?
