Pattaya beach "back to being a major tourist attraction": So where are all the tourists!?

Thai media published a glowing report on the renovation of Pattaya beach saying that happy tourists visited in droves on the long weekend.

But evidence was non-existent. The Manager photographer seemed to have arrived a day late.

There appeared to be one foreigner sunbathing and just a few other visitors walking about on the largely deserted sands.

In their story Manager trumpeted that the 400 million baht spent on sand to widen the beach by 35 meters meant that Pattaya now had a beach to be proud of that was a major attraction for Thailand.

They said that during the four day long weekend droves of tourists were spreading out their mats, playing volleyball and football games on the massive expanse of pristine sand.

But there was no evidence of any of that.

They also said that the work which is ongoing had received a huge thumps up from tourists and was a far greater success than anyone had envisaged.

Again they gave no evidence for this assertion in quotes or opinions - except all the pictures of the empty beach.

And, once again, no mention was made of any attempt to improve the quality of the sea water with its floating debris - one reason why many people prefer to stay away.

Today was one of the worst days I have seen ever, with thousands of Chinese cueing for their free parasial, hoardes of tour guide staff yelling and screaming and blocking the pathway, tour buses triple parked , hundreds of cans of 2 stroke fuel getting mixed on the sand, hundereds of loud power boats with the driver reving the engines to create extra noise....ya its paradise baby

In their zil to 'clean up' the beach they throw the baby out with the bath water, overdone rules and regulations, too many restrictions of what people can do and can't do... loosen up the rigid attitude, let people feel comfortable on the beach, allow controlled and licanced beach chairs and merchandise vendors ply the beach,

let them feel that they are having a holiday and not in a place where there are more don't than do's....

When you say  "too many restrictions of what people can do and can't do"   are you referring  solely to vendors or  are there restrictions on beach goers as well?

Well that has never been a problem before, has it? We have all seen many, many stories here that blatantly flew in the face of the evidence. This report has it right though. Until something is done about the nasty brown bits in the water, no one in their right mind is going to go swimming there, new clean sand or not. I think we can safely say that was 400 Million Baht utterly wasted. Wonder what the next stupid idea will be?

Strange that, no families on the beach, must have been out enjoying a spot of jet skiing or running from light fingered ladyboys.

An off-topic flame post and a reply have been removed from this thread.

I know! TAT will promote Pattaya as a family resort.

Oh, errr...

Sounds like a perverts dream...they take them in hand, but gently.

Looks an idyllic place of tranquillity for a sand fly.

Who would leave pristine sand to go tripping down exposed sandbags into filthy water - indeed why go to such sand in the first place?

It's obviously a misprint. It should have said "trumps" - a reference to a group of troublesome senior citizens illegally playing bridge.

All you need to do is bring your own bubble. Perfectly safe then.

Image result for the boy in the bubble

The biggest reason is the good weather in Europe, why pay a lot when you can stay home and have the same, but a lot cheaper  ?

Pattaya's been dying for years, I guess the more they try to save it the worse it gets. I used to go there twice a year but I never go near the place now.

Re replacing the sand and reclaiming the beach, have the learn-ed Generals never heard of longshore drift which can be controlled by the use of Groynes? I remember as a kid going to beaches in the South West of England where these had been deployed successfully for years, but of course a permanent solution would not fill the back pocket!

Completing it as there's still about a mile down to Walking St to go .. In fairness to 'em something did have to be done as it was getting seriously eroded up that end but it is in vain if they don't do something about the water pollution .. And if they wanna now keep it pristine a word needs to be had with some of the tourists who use the boats to and from Koh Larn as the junk they disregard as they troop back up the beach is out of order particularly the bags that contain those cheesy plastic plate souvenir things ..

Have not you heard yet? Need another 400 million to bring in clean water ??

There's a beach at Pattaya! Who knew?

aha!! now we know where all that sand drifted to, from Surfers Paradise

terra forming was attempted there years ago...

Ministry of Tracking Bracelets on another roll. Note in the photo, something the news report missed, all of the big comfy pillows stacked up along the shoreline. Good idea in case tourists stumble into and trip on oh say a submerged discarded pylon or get mortally gouged stepping on a broken bottle when emerging from a swim. "We wouldn't want you to get hurt while you're Pattaya! Hehe!" "Nooo! Have big pillow now! You get hurt?!  You just lie down! Good for you ! Only have in Pattaya!"

Thailand and Pattaya in particular just never seems to get the balance right .Too many Russians at one time ,too many Chines now ,beaches covered in so many chairs you cannot see the sand or no chairs at all.Venders in your face every two minutes or no venders at all .Speed boats and jet skis ruling out totally a quiet day on the beach .But to claim a world class beach is ridiculous in the extreme ,how can that be when you are faced with a turd or a condom bobbing by as you take a dip .Pattaya could have a very nice beach that would attract lots of people but not until they clean up the filthy ,unhealthy water .The truth is most visitors to Pattaya don't go down to the beach at all ,if they want a beach holiday they go elsewhere .

"....drove of tourists visited Pattaya..." ok, ok, I try my best to believe.

And you can jump straight from the pristine fake beach into the clear unpolluted turquoise fake sea.!

Chinese don't go to the beach and the others don't come anymore because of the spitting crowds

Who are the spitting crowds? What do they spit - feathers perhaps?
