UK says Brexit no-deal warnings are 'Project Reality', not 'Project Fear'

VIENNA (Reuters) - British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt denied on Wednesday that warnings about fallout from a disorderly exit from the European Union were an attempt to scare opponents of the government's preferred Brexit plan into supporting it.

With less than eight months until Britain leaves the EU, the government has yet to agree an exit deal with Brussels and has begun talking more publicly about the prospect of leaving the bloc without any formal agreement on what happens next.

That has spooked businesses, which warn of chaotic disruption to supply chains and for consumers.

Ministers will begin publishing advice later this month on how to cope with a 'No Deal' Brexit - prompting accusations of scaremongering from those who say leaving the EU will benefit Britain.

"This is not project fear, this is project reality," Hunt told a news conference in Vienna, when asked whether Britain was using scare tactics.

"We have to make a decision on Britain’s future relationship with the EU by the end of this year and we have to be very honest with ourselves about the choices that we face."

In the run-up to the referendum in mid-2016 when Britons voted by 52 to 48 percent to exit the EU, the government's predictions of dire economic consequences in the event of a 'leave' vote - which have not materialised - were criticised as 'Project Fear'.

Prime Minister Theresa May's ministers have fanned out across Europe during the summer break from parliament, trying to win support for a Brexit plan that would see Britain maintain closer ties with the bloc than some had anticipated.

"We need to have these frank discussions because time is very, very short and we are clear that what we want is a friendship," Hunt said, speaking alongside his Austrian counterpart Karin Kneissl.

Parts of May's plan have been rejected by Brussels, and it has split opinion in her government, her party, and among voters. That leaves May with an uphill struggle to maintain unity while steering Britain through its most significant upheaval in decades.

"Britain will prosper and succeed whatever the outcome of these talks because we’re that kind of country," Hunt said.

"But we would much rather a future when we look at all the instability in the world, all the pressures, all the unpredictability ... where people who share values are standing together shoulder to shoulder."

I wouldn't mind the EU to be stuffed with (former) British companies. Bring it on. ?

There is also large amount of Asian etc.companies, which have European offices in UK.

Those start moving to EU countries as well as they need a presence in EU. There is nothing to be afraid of, this is a good thing.

When the EU finally rips apart, and it will do, the only question is a matter of time, things in Europe will inevitably get nasty again. You can see the signs of the "fault lines" developing already.

You do understand that the foreign companies need to have presence in EU? It was not EU decision,  which forced the companies to leave UK once Brexit is Brexit.

June 2016 George Osborne predicted economic collapse and hundreds of thousands of City jobs moving to Europe.

Yesterday the City of London estimated that between 5000 to 13000 jobs will actually move.

The Europeans need to wake up and understand that a No Deal will have a significant effect on future trade on both sides of the English Channel and Irish Sea.

This is just posturing and will go on relentlessly for some time yet.  None of it means anything because it is all unknown until we know what we are going to do.  "Boris tipped to make a leadership challenge!"  "Hunt pitching in with no deal comments."  It is all orchestrated and quite honestly threads like this just illustrate that we all fall for hype..  A complete waste of time because tomorrow there will be more hype  to stir the loins!

Britain already had 2 year transformation period, which was supposed to make all the needed brexit deals between Britain and EU. How has UK used that time? Internal fighting, trying to get some eat cake, keep cake deals, complaining that EU is not being fair for UK. UK has not even started the negotiations.

Well, UK wanted out. Brexit is Brexit.

Fear not Boris said we will end up with a better deal out than in the 350m slapped on the side of bus expected expulsion of immigrants the very next day including the ones from the Indian sub continent whipped up by the taking back of our borders sovereignty and our own laws are all perfectly true in every flat cap Brexit voters head. The facts will be every millionaire will continue to do very well in or out and the poor will end up with the enormous tab as always the EU will implode sooner or later without the UK we appear to have missed the foot and shot ourselves in the face?

I disagree as IMO it is mostly the remainers that believe the hype.  Those actually thinking, generally recognise propaganda as such, and try to point out why it's nothing other than 'project fear'.

But I do agree that the hype/project fear propaganda will continue for some time yet ☹️.

The hype is pitched to both sides and both sides are gullible enough to believe it.  How you can figure that the remainers are more gullible than the leavers is laughable, IMO.

"May tells Macron that It's the Chequers deal or no deal!"  So says the Daily Mail.  Anybody can see that is just bullsh*t especially after the earlier headline said that May was on a "charm offensive by visiting Macron".

We all need to stop searching for quotes from the media who all have papers to sell.  It's all speculative rubbish.  There are no facts.

Well  it seemed an attractive  idea to regain our sovereign place in the world etc  , it is just that just days after Brexit - Fox rushes of to India to shake hands with Duarte (?) at some Asian do . Meanwhile May puts her scarf on an rushes to Saudi to kiss the Sheik's ring -  where they execute people with a golden sword - ( and that's only the women ) and invites a brand new half mad US President to tea.

That's when I started to have doubts ! .

Well, we'll see, won't we?  And in any event, watching the Brits bash each other will be entertaining for years to come.

Yes indeed we will see (eventually).  As for the Brits bashing themselves for years to come over Brexit I doubt that will happen that much.  There will almost certainly be a general election whichever way it goes and then the Brits will go back to party political bickering.  It is a country divided and never more than now.  We need the young to heal it and that will take quite a time.

As far as I'm concerned it's about how low can we get the value of the pound, I'm sure there's a tonload of guys out there making a packet out of this, and when it rebounds a tonload more will make another packet.

They are called currency dealers, either full or part timers. I know a couple who are neighbours.  The secret is to sell for now, I would think,  although you would need to have very big balls to commit either way today.
