Red shirts warn Prayut to avoid repeat of 1992 ‘Black May’

A red-shirt leader on Saturday warned Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha of possible bloodshed similar to “Black May” if he perpetuates his political power.

 

Korkaew Pikulthong, a leading member of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), said “senior persons of the country” should remind Prayut of the possible outcome.

 

Korkaew was speaking to reporters in front of the Bangkok Remand Prison where he waited to welcome UDD chairman Jatuporn Promphan, who was released Saturday morning after serving a one-year jail sentence.

 

Korkaew said the UDD believes that the post-coup National Council for Peace and Order led by Prayut would try to retain its political power, as did those behind the 1991 coup led by General Suchinda Kraprayoon.

 

Suchinda broke his promise and accepted the post of prime minster following a post-coup election in 1992. That led to street protests that were later crushed by the military, resulting in bloodshed in what has become known as the “Black May” or “Bloody May” incident. There were 52 military-confirmed deaths, many disappearances and allegations of torture.

 

“To prevent such an incident from happening again, I think all sides should discuss how to pre-empt it, and senior persons of the country should remind Prayut, the prime minister and the NCPO chief,” Korkaew said.

 

He added that UDD leaders would soon hold discussions on how to tackle the sources of repeated national crises.

There are certainly similarities between the current situation and the lead-up to those terrible events of 1992. However, I don't see Prayuth caving in the same way Suchinda did and one must remember that there was a very powerful 'mediator ' in residence at that time. Not so now.

 

red shirts threatening violence and death again, nothing new, they are a terrorist group at best and use  violence as their tool of choice. The sooner these groups(reds & yellows) are removed the better, they are there purely to cause trouble, they are not there for the betterment of Thailand at all.

Pulling the stunts again. 

If it happens, only the innocent naive citizens will get hurt.  These instigators will gone missing somewhere safely.

Their secret mission always in the name of 'democracy" has been since the group established.

Shouldn't have been any mediation necessary as it should never have escalated to that point. 

round and round we go again, looking back in history I don't see this ever ending.

I think it's not 2009 but 2010 may 19  ;

officially more than 90 people died and unofficialy more than 700 

and before we get into this 'most Thais want this - most Thais want that' debate IMO most Thais just want to provide for their families and give their children a better life than what they had when they grew up. TVF members get more worked up on these political issues in a day than the average Thai does in a lifetime, unless it's impacting their ability to feed, clothe and educate their children.

I tend to agree that Thailand is looking at a similar situation to 1992. The question that I have pondering on this Saturday afternoon is whether it would be better to have a quick, sharp event like 1992 or a slow, stifling, wet blanket thrown over the country? The early nineties saw horrible violence played out on the street, but relatively speaking, it was over and done with quite quickly. On the other hand, when one peers over the border to Burma, you can see the effects of the stultification still prevalent 50+ years later.

 

Which would be worse?

You're pretty right there, most Thais couldn't give a rats arse which group of leaches are at the trough, as it same same - red, yellow, junta makes no difference.

Exactly, about time these upstart reds accepted their place in society and realised the current "government" is as good as it gets. 

Not so sure about the Yellows, they have what they want at this time ? 

The Thai public appear to be the enemy of the RTA....there's no plausible reason to think such actions will not occur again....

Which is a good but not the only reason, why Thailand is still very much a 3rd world feudal state. The "naive" average Thai must feel powerless to change anything for the better.

You really have to be spoon feed. Has the corruption involving watchgate or parkgate ever being investigated? Is the NACC on top of military corruption and their abnormal wealth? 

 

Does anyone ever wonder what would have happened if Samak hadn't been removed for having a cooking show? We'll never know, but it couldn't have been much worse if they had left well enough alone.

You can’t talk about violent groups without referring to military atrocities. The yellows and reds were recent manifestation but the military goes back history of violence. Why are you so afraid to mention military atrocities.

By the way el, you are wrong that I am afraid to mention military atrocities, just do some homework, but of course as usual you post twists what you think will support your quest to support a very corrupt man and his family who accepted a telecoms license from a very tough and ruthless Thai army general.
