Currently in UK but heading back to Thailand at end of August.  Had a couple of recent blood tests showing PSA at around 5. No other symptoms and apparently feels normal on DRE. I fear the worst though, because my father died from prostate cancer.

My GP here in the UK is talking about a biopsy. I would prefer a multiparametric MRI prior to anything invasive.  I can have MP-MRI done privately in UK for about GBP1000.  Is there anywhere in Bangkok that does these?

Few places only and will cost just as much in a private hospital as in UK. About half that at Chulalonghorn (major govt teaching hospital) but may have wait list and it is not an easy hospital for non Thai speakers to access.

Have you already had a transrectal ultrasound? Inexpensive and would usually be done before proceeding to MRI or biopsy.

Thanks for your reply.

No TRUS yet. Was thinking its better to go straight to MP-MRI. The cost is not really that significant in the grand scheme of things.

I have a Thai friend whose wife is a paediatrician at Chula hospital so may call on him to assist.

Yes, that may help. Also see if you can have a Thai accompany you for the visit.

I believe they do the MRIs only on certain days and you'll need to see a urologist skilled at interpreting them first.

Is there a good reason to wait on a prostate biopsy?  Would that not give you a much more definitive answer to your concerns?  Just my two cents questions.

Biopsies ate not without some risk. Also unless they know exactly where to sample, can yield a false negative. At a minimum should have transrectal ultrasound first and biopsy, if indicated, should be either ultrasound guided or MRI guided so as to improve odds of getting a sample of the tumor if there is one.
