My Thai wife tells me no drinking this 3 day w/e starting today but our local bar in Udon Thani was open and thriving this morning (friday) so whats the story ?

The story might be that your wife is either confused or very well informed

Sunday is Queens birthday ("mother's day"), a public holiday but not known for alcohol ban in the past.

So far I found absolutely no clue for any ban this weekend.

Of course being open today (Friday) is no indication.

Today is a normal working day.

The three day long weekend is Sat to Mon (11 to 13).

Mon 13 substitute holiday, offices closed.

It's only 5 Buddhist holidays that are "dry" in Thailand each year, the next 5 being:-

Awk Pansa - Wednesday 24 October 2018

Makha Bucha - Tuesday 19 February 2019

Visakha Bucha - Saturday 18 May 2019 (the substitution holiday on Monday 20 May is NOT "dry")

Asalha Bucha - Tuesday 16 July 2019

Khao Pansa - Wednesday 17 July 2019
