Phuket’s tourism industry has received a major shot in the arm with the unveiling of Blue Tree Phuket, a US$40-million (Bt1.32 billion) multi-dimensional destination waterpark and entertainment complex set over 140 rai (22 hectares) in Cherng Talay.

Positioned as Phuket’s premier family attraction, Blue Tree is located within easy reach of the province’s popular central west coast and will be the island’s first international-standard, fully integrated waterpark and family entertainment complex, placing it at the cutting edge of a growing demand for inland tourism on the island.

The complex will feature a mix of retail, destination dining, waterpark, beach club, and health and fitness with its star attraction at its centre – Blue Tree Lagoon – designed and built by world-leading US-based water-attraction specialists Crystal Lagoons, according to the company’s release on Monday.

I just can't see this catching on. I hope to be proved wrong, but it's basically a giant swimming pool in a fairly off-pitch location, with limited thrills for youngsters, and as for the shopping/dining, Boat Avenue, nearby but in a much more convenient location, already has that covered..

I can't see this working either unless this is included in the Chinese bus tours.  I have always thought a good waterpark would work in Patong, but Chern Talay?  BTW, wasn't there supposed to be a big waterpark going in in Kathu a few years back?

Water parks are for people who can't get to a real beach.

Sticking one in the middle of Phuket is like building a Rain Forest Cafe somewhere on the Amazon River.

Here's a thought...  Why not spend the money on preserving what makes Phuket a world class destination.  Like sewage treatment, waste disposal and police enforcement.

Don't agree with you on this point. There are loads of water parks around the world in beach areas and they are very busy and popular. Loads of Spanish beach resorts have water parks in close proximity. Hua Hin has three.

Kids get bored just going to the beach and want more activities and Phuket isn't great in this regard, especially as an increasing number of tourists shun animal-based places.

Plus it's private money, whereas your final admirable suggestion wold be paid for from public funds.

However, will this go the way of so many other planned projects in Phuket and never see the light of day?

Hotels with small waterpark work great here. Like in Maikhao West Sands or in Khao Lak The Sands. The kids love it.

But stand alone waterpark with shops is a different story.

Going by the picture, it looks like just a really big swimming pool.

Cant see it being a huge success, if its ever gets built, may well go the way of Splash Jungle, slowly down hill, silly pricing to cover their losses and kids getting sick from the poor water treatment.

Would need to be world class standard with regular attraction updates, a huge wave pool for quality all year round surf would be nice!

There is a defunct such waterpark on west side of Langkawi island. Large place with slides etc but abandoned since about 2005 or thereabout. Aimed for the tourist trade which is considerably less than Phuket but same concept and similar beaches.

Splash Jungle isn't going down.
It was mismanaged before Central group took it over but it's going great now.
Went about 2 weeks ago and it was packed.
