It's not their decision at all. It is the decision and law of the authorities in the country of birth.

Well I'm glad we cleared that up too. You've been telling everyone for half of this thread that he's Irish.

If he was born in Northern Ireland, he is.

I've also made clear I accept he is British.

It goes much deeper than just a bit of paper mate.

I suspect deep down you know it too.

Wrong - it is no more or no less than a piece of paper.

Whatever his nationality, which is irrelevant to the story, the guy is a jerk and deserves what he's got.

Irish jerk..........and deserves what he's got.

They are called Jek by the Thais and Thai-Chinese by everyone else.

Does that answer your question?

"Jek" is a derogatory word used by some Thais to denote Thais of Chinese origin .

The guy in question , both his parents were probably Irish

Are you going to say that Thais of Chinese decent are not really Thais ?

Here you have one of the major problems with TV.  Some members are determined to base their discussion on "facts" that are not stated or referenced.  This undermines so many potentially interesting subjects.  Stick to the facts and, while I am ranting, laws give us the structure by which we live.  As stated elsewhere by Bluespunk, we do not get to decide each other's nationality.

Good, then you agree that as this man has a British passport, he is British.

If he has a passport, then the law and authorities must have agreed he is British.

Glad we cleared that up.

Irrelevant.  You stated -

You do not decide another's nationality.

That is their decision.

Which is bollux.  I can't 'decide' to be a Thai no more than you can 'decide' to become a Somalian (assuming you aren't already)

The guy stole an item from a shop , that may be normal behavior in the UK , where anything not nailed down gets stolen , but its a different matter in Thailand .

If you take anything that isnt yours, you will get punished

My understanding from reading the full story was that he just picked up the item and played around with it... he did not steal it. Hence, I thought whilst his behaviour was juvenile and disrespectful.... being arrested and asked to pay 300,000 baht was excessive.... don't you think!? As I stated earlier.... any sympathy soon disappeared after reading about his disrespectful behaviour towards the Buddah statue.

Evidently a bit of a tourist toe-rag. Hope the jail stint makes him think about being an ass in the future.....somehow I think it won't.....4 days wasn't long enough for it to sink in.

Passport equals nationality.

Nonsense. It has far more to do with culture, heritage, religious beliefs that accidental place of birth or luck of the draw in an immigration lottery.

The current leaders that are destroying the World would like you to believe that though, very convenient in implementing their global socialist order where they encourage mediocrity.

Not for me pal.

Nationalist pride, like other variants of pride, can be a substitute for self respect.

Reading his full story which he sold to the Sun newspaper. Complete BS, full of holes.

I would love to hear the shopkeeper's side of the story. Probably did steal it and received a 3500 baht fine/bribe. not £3500.

I do not dispute that.  I'll type slowly as you clearly can't read very fast - I merely state it is not the decision of the individual

You can get them in the crocodile farm restaurant in Pattaya for 150 baht. Crocodile kebabs (Thai style) are a bit more expensive but very tasty.

And great if you want some quick snap for lunch!

8000 quid for that small skull is pure extortion of a tourist..and she even had no proof that he stole it.

The vendor should also get banged up, for extortion and giving thailand a bad name....Was she allowed to sell this crockhead anyway? I thought it needs labels to show that it's okay for selling.

Yes ,I'm sure a couple of Israeli girls lent a guy of Arab descent £3500!

Complete BS from start to finish. Probably had to pay 3500 baht to get out of jail.
