Long story short here. I was due to leave Swampy at 12pm today (Sun) Flight cancelled till Mon. it was with KLM.

The travel agency gave me the money for another night in the hotel, I am stuck in the hotel all day and new flight

leaves Swampy tomorrow (Mon) Lost the first day of my holiday in the UK.

What sort of compensation should I be looking for? How should I go about claiming? Through the travel agency

or KLM themselves? Thank you.

Why was the flight cancelled? Of it was out of there control .....

It is a European flight to Europe . So there are strict rules for compensation

I don't know why it was cancelled, I phoned travel agency last night to confirm, and they told me it was cancelled, they brought a new travel initerary to my hotel and gave me the money for another night.

So it is possible I will not get any compensation?

Check this out:

https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm

I will assume you are flying to Europe: so it is an EU airline on an intercontinental flight to EU, the distance is more than 3500 KM and you were not informed 14 days or more prior to the departure. Thus, you should be able to get a 600 EUR compensation from the airline.

Most airlines have online forms to request such compensation.

Of course, there may be some additional circumstances, which will enable the airline to wiggle out of paying this money.

*Also, please check if you are insured against such events.

Many credit cards (e.g. Amex Gold) offer insurance against delayed or cancelled flights (it is usually applicable if the delay is over x hours). You may then pay - and get reimbursed - for hotels, meals, transportation etc. up to a certain amount. Not really a solution to your problem, but a nice meal paid for by the insurer may make the whole thing more bearable.

Are you sure that the flight was cancelled or you were thrown out due to overbooking?

You say today, KLM, "12 pm".

Is it KLM 876 to Amsterdam, scheduled for 12:05?

This flight is shown as departed 12:03, all green on time?

This might make a difference in compensation.

You should claim under Regulation EU261 as you're travelling to an EU member state on an airline based in an EU member state.

The only caveat is whether the delay / cancellation was outside the control of the airline, i.e. the weather is outside the control of the airline.

I have claimed from BA previously under EU261 as our LHR - BKK was cancelled and received 2 x EUR 600 and all of our expenses, i.e. hotel, food, toiletries and taxis.

We also received GBP 200 on arrival at Swampy as our luggage went walkabout too.

As written, to all sources available there was NO KLM flight cancelled today.

Fishy.

KLM 876, departed 12:03, expected AMS at 18:29 (local time).

Well that depends on the complete legislation which governs this subject for European airlines / routes.

Also, did you buy any additional travel insurance?

I realize many people don't when it's a full service airline, however I discovered a while back it's very easy to buy additional coverage on-line with different levels of cover and can be very inexpensive. Worth a thought.

Fishy.

Indeed, KL876 is winging its way over Volgograd at this very moment.  You may have been bumped, OP.

Which would be good news to the OP as being bumped is within the control of the airline.

You should claim direct from KLM, OP.  Though, ensure to retain all your receipts to attach to your claim.  It really doesn't take long and our claim was settled in full within two weeks.

What do you mean bumped? Maybe they were overbooked, but I'm leaving tomorrrow.

Yes, overbooked so they pick a victim and bump them off the flight.  There's two types of bumped.  One is bumped down the classes and the other being bumped off the flight.

Thanks for telling me, I hope they will do the decent thing and compensate me.

No time like the present, though you do have a staggering six years to make a claim under EU261.

Did the OP go to the airport and get bumped or did the travel agency contact him before he went to the airport to say the flight was canceled and he had been re-booked?

Since the flight did take place, I strongly suspect the travel agent is either being economical with the truth or something is getting lost in translation.

This is low season and as a fairly frequent KLM flyer, it's unlikely they are overbooked unless it's the last week of Dutch school summer holidays. From my experience in the US, Brazil, The Gambia and Japan, school holidays can wreak havoc on international seat availability unless you're at the front of the bus.
