Travelling to the EU with a UK passport if there’s no Brexit deal

In addition to the passport validity issues which have already been discussed at length elsewhere, another point which might be worth noting from the latest guidance posted by theoldgit on the Home Country forum (see above) is that UK nationals visiting the Schengen area would, after 29th March 2019, only be permitted to stay for a maximum of 90 days in the event of no deal being struck before this date. Presumably this would mean UK passports being stamped upon entry into - and exit from - the Schengen area, just as they are in the case of Thailand at present.

 

What the guidance does not make clear, however, is whether there is any likelihood of UK nationals intending to visit the Schengen area after 29th March 2019 being required to obtain suitable visas. I am taking it that the UK would simply be added to the EU's list of exempted third countries (see below), but might this be yet another issue on which the EU are currently playing hardball?

I don’t think they know yet, I think it’s unlikely that visas would be required, but I believe that Schengen countries are introducing something akin to the the US ESTA pre authorisation system, which we will need to comply with.
Of course our spouses will also lose the right to free movement so will need to apply and meet all the conditions required for any visa national.

There is some info on ETIAS (the European ESTA equivalent) in the link below (don't know how official this site is, though). As you say, its application to UK nationals seems up in the air at the present time:-

Yes, as well as our spouses losing the right to free travel, they (or, more likely, we) may have to start paying the visa application fee (currently 35 EUR) as we shall no longer fall within the current exempted categories. And, in the particular case of France (of personal interest to me since that is where my sister lives), an attestation d'accueil may be needed in my wife's case from the local mairie.
