Phuket airport expects 21 million passengers throughout next year

PHUKET, 6 October 2016 (NNT) – Phuket international airport expects to accommodate at least 21 million domestic and international passengers throughout next year due to the constantly growing tourism sector. 

Phuket airport director Thani Chuangchoo disclosed that Phuket is a fast-growing tourist destination with more than 15 million arrivals each year and most choose to travel by plane. 

Phuket airport can accommodate 20 flights per hour and 12.5 million passengers per year, he said. 

It expects at least 21 million passengers throughout next year, marking an increase of 7.4 percent from this year.

Math, along with sensible planning, is not a strong point. 

If they are going to continue with open floodgates to one of the most visited places on the planet they really need to get new infrastructure going.

The new off-island airport is needed now, and it has to start construction without the inevitable 2 year "ecological" study and lengthy contract process.  (Thai speak for divvying up the dosh)

And, how about a high speed train to link Bangkok with the second busiest place in the country?  I realize the new train systems are all pointed north in line with the Chinese "silk road" vision, but there is also a real need down south. 

I somehow think a rudimentary grasp of the basics of maths is not a prerequisite to gaining the position of airport Director.

Don't worry they have the maths worked out, maybe not the way we would think though.

In another article in TV, 3 Thailand cities visited in World's Top 20, mentioned that Phuket has 9.29 million visitors, this article lists 12 to 15 million with 7.4% increase to 21 million by next year.. Pie in the sky figures as usual where maths isn't a strong subject in someone's education no doubt.. How can anyone, anywhere make such ambit predictions anyway?? 

 

With the recent decline in Chinese tourists visiting, and the recent reporting that the tsamami warning system has had a faulty bouy at sea since last year, and recent boat safety issues after 49 deaths from the Phoenix capsizing.. 

 

I would be expecting a decline in visitors next year.. IMO..

Which raises the question. Does Phuket Airport have priority fast lanes for Chinese tourists and given precedence over other tourists who have to use slow moving lanes? 

As a goodwill gesture Chinese tourists should be given a complimentary life jacket when entering Phuket. Perhaps Big Joke could help out and go there and give his usual hoopla media performance and self promotion.

In my understanding, the Mastercard article is about international visitors and doesn't include domestic passengers. The estimates for the airport does include domestics although the numbers are still flawed.

Phuket probably has more international visitors than the advertised figure as many enter through Bangkok and travel on domestically. (I've no idea how Mastercard arrive at their estimates for Pattaya)

Yes, it does. And it works both ways; the Chinese appear to have priority lanes and other foreign visitors have lanes without Chinese.

 

Have you ever stood in a queue behind twenty Chinese, most of whom haven't filled in the arrival card properly and can't speak a word in any sort of common language with the IO?

 

I consider it a win-win!
