Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha led government officials and others to give alms to 890 monks and novices at the Royal Plaza on Saturday morning to make merit for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Prayut and his wife chaired the rite that was held at 6.15am on the second anniversary of King Bhumibol's passing.

Privy councillors, the president of the National Legislative Assembly, presidents of constitutional organisations, Cabinet members and their spouses, participated in the rite.

Prayut paid respect to the portrait of King Rama V and Buddhist monks chanted prayers as he offered robes to the monks as part of the ceremony.

The prime minister then paid respect to the portrait of King Bhumibol and gave alms to the 890 monks and novices.
