Cambodian, Vietnamese found dead in Immigration detention cell

Two men, a Cambodian and a Vietnamese, were found dead in a detention room at the Immigration Police Bureau early on Wednesday.

 

Pol Lt Col Kamolpop Dissayabutr, deputy inspector of Thung Mahamek police station, said ground-floor detention room No 14Bt, where the two men were found dead, was holding 15 foreign nationals at the time.

 

Both bodies were found in sleeping position on one side of the room.

 

The Cambodian was identified only as Sakhi, 55, and the Vietnamese as Robat, 72.

 

The Cambodian man was transferred from Nakhon Pathom and Vietnamese from Nakhon Si Thammarat.

 

The two had been charged with unlawfully entering the country.

 

A detainee in the same room told police that he got up in the night to use toilet and noticed that the two were not breathing, so he alerted officials.

 

The bodies were sent for autopsy at the Chulalongkorn Hospital.

Obviously they had been fighting which resulted in mutual accidental deaths (taking a cue from MBS).  Big Joke's overzealous "X-Ray Outlaw Foreigners" with raids of nightclubs, schools and condos could not be the cause of death.

These people are treated no better than animals, probably a miserable hot airless cell, certainly with no window, everyone sleeping on the dirty concrete floor, an open hole for a toilet in the corner, germs and infections spreading everywhere, no wonder that an old guy could just pass away in these conditions.

Maybe, for once, Big Joke will have a more serious, more concerned look on that face of his. This comes right within his remit and happened on his watch and many people will be asking 'WHY?'

Often wondered what happens if someone is arrested which is on Med's / Injections every few hours which keep them alive, or have allergic reaction to some foods... do Immigration detention officers listen ?  get the correct foods and Med's on time ?

^ I don't remember all the details, but a few years ago an Austrian tourist accidentally overstayed and died in detention because he couldn't get his meds.

 

He was referred to as a prince, though I don't think that Austria has had official royalty since the end of WWI.

These two men have probably already suffered so much in their lives. A tragedy that they should end like this, and probably leaving hungry mouths behind at home. RIP.

exactly. you people dont understand that in a dirty dark counry like thailand, anyone , any tourist, can find himself in immigration cell for a small mistake he did'nt even realised he did !!

"The Vietnamese man was an amputee, missing his right leg, and was wearing a blue shirt with white stripes and an adult diaper. The man had been caught in Nakhon Si...that both immigrants suffered from pneumonia. The Vietnamese man also had a heart disease and tuberculosis."

as was mentioned in the OTHER newspaper.

 

Such is the barbarity of life behind bars here for falling foul of immigration regulations.

But virtually no one of these explains how TWO elderly persons with nothing in common die exactly the same night in the same cell

Strange that the article on two dead detainees is on the same page as an invitation to come to Thailand. Maybe they could use the catch phrase “A great place die”

Couldn't agree more if the news is true. It's strange that a news source such as The Nation fails to mention the Vietnamese guys health or of the other poor souls prior to their death in incarceration, whereas the OTHER paper posts about it all over the net today.

Since they are not infants (think SIDS, sudden infant death syndrome) and the chance of two adults dying (of say a heart attack) side by side at the same time are probably a zillion to one it all smells funny...and is definitely not good PR for immigration police and the country as a whole.

 

Hopefully someone will own up to the true reason rather then a good excuse.

Changing an immigration document isn't a small mistake, it cost this guy his life.

Perhaps there are people dying every night, just a coincidence that two from the same cell died that night

Great job immigration, an overcrowded cell can have the same effect as a room with a malfunctioning wood stove. But they are just too dumb to anticipate this kind of possibilities. Maybe it is time to think of creating humane conditions for people arrested for minor offences..
