How to use social security for medical visits

Featured Replies

I checked the social security website but can't find answers there and my employer is useless in these matters. My assigned hospital is Lerdsin and this is for illness, not a check up. Do I make an appointment or just walk in? For a specific issue can you see a specialist or do they only allow you to see a general practitioner? I also looked at Lerdsin's website but of course no info there. Any help appreciated.

Initially you just show up, as early as possible. There is usually some sort of triage counter where you tell a nurse what you need and are given a queque number and told where to go. You may need to first wait in a line to get a chart form, varies with the hospital.

Some hospitals will let you see a specialist directly based on what you tell the nurse the problem is, especially if the type of specialist is pretty self evident. Others may have you seen by a general doctor (ususlly an intern) first.

If you can arrange to have a Thai speaker along for the first visit it will help a lot.

Most govt hospitals have an after hours clinic where you can directly access a senior doctor of any specialty but that visit will not be covered by SS. In Bangkok maybe 500 baht. I am not certain if SS will pay the standard amount (including any meds) and you just pay the difference when going this route or you pay the whole thing, perhaps someone else with SS can advise.
