Where is a Good Place to Go for Loy Krathong

I have been trying to research where I would like to be for Loy Krothong. Im not really interested in partying, rather, just seeing nice stuff, taking some pics, eating and the like. Pattaya was nice for it as all the Girls were dressed up and it was a big party, but is there some place better? How about here in Bangkok? Ayyuthaya? Any suggestions?

Khon Kaen.

Chiang Mai.

Lopburi.

Im going to Chiang  Mai in December, and Lopburi for the Monkey Buffet. Can you tell me more about Sukkothai and Khon Kaen?

The ultimative experience was (for me) the river cruise in Bangkok a few years ago.

Care to share some details?

I think the best places are all those places which are not the big places which are recommended by everyone.

Because all those recommended places will be full with lots of people.

A couple of years ago I was on the river. Put the krathong in the water and not a minute later some swimming boys snatched it to sell it again - how romantic...

This year I will try to find a small lake or maybe a small place somewhere near water with not enough space for too many people. I am sure that will be better than all the well known places with thousands of people...

Chiang Mai

Disagree 100%. I was there and couldn't find anywhere decent, compared with Pattaya or Bkk.

Anyway, I stopped going to the actual celebrations a few years back as the morons were throwing huge fireworks around that could have blinded me, and I was hit by a rocket on Pattaya beach, which burnt my pants.

It's not compulsory to rent a takeaway for the night. You can just go to look.

I dont go window shopping or look at food. Is not a museum ????

maybe better for you to stay home then. I still enjoy it in CM with my family over the years.

wherever you live look for a wat that's putting up a fun fair for the occasion...there you will find most local folks floating their boats with food stalls and general festivity...good for observing the locals at play in their milieu...with associated photo opportunities and etc, the sound is usually deafening...with the wife's family we descend in a gang and I usually get some grilled issan sausages to munch on after the boat business...all kindsa good food on offer usually...excellent eye candy opportunities as well, with country girls in micro shorts, strolling about with their friends, etc...

'why is that old falang wearing sunglasses after dark and standing over there where he thinks that no one can see him?' 'yeah, he needs to get a bag to carry whatever he's got in his front pants pocket...poor old guy, maybe we should assist him?'

Now thats an interesting observation. Near me, Wat Khun Chan, Wat Praknam and Wat Absonsawan form sort of a triangle of Wats along the Khlong Dan........

the fun fair being raised the day before indicates which wat will have the most attendance...or you can scout about as some steps on the wat premises down to the klong indicates possible loy kratong activity...the steps by the water is where people go to float the boats...

Hmmmmmm....the first pic is from the foot bridge between the three Wats looking up to Wat Paknam with Wat Khun Chan on the right...the second from the the bank near Wat Absonsawan....Wat Paknam is famous

too and a very rich Temple as I understand it.....this may be the spot! All are within say 300 meters walk of each other across the canal....

Thanks for the suggestion! I can walk there for gods sake  ????

I think that the wats that appear in your photos are unlikely as there are masses of people with the little boats...the steps by the water that I mention are purpose built and go all the way across sorta like concrete bleachers (terraces) in a sports stadium...there are usually dudes in the water that will give yer boat a little push so that the candles on the boat don't go out before they get out floatin' fer a bit...

anyway, look for the funfairs as you can't miss them with lots of lights and blaring music...the first time that I went some years ago I expected a sedate religious ceremony and instead was presented with a madhouse with loud music...and one of my nieces (about 10 y.o. at the time) was concerned and approached and took hold of my arm and said 'are you OK uncle tutsi?'...she has remained a favorite ever since...she arranged to have her dad drive me home on his motorbike...

her dad died of TB 3 years ago and she had her first baby 6mos ago...she is a beautiful girl...

Someone told me last night there is a huge party there. Im going to roll over to Wat Paknam next few days and find an English speaking monk and ask.
