BANGKOK, 8th November 2018 (NNT)-The Ministry of Public Health is determined to lower the number of new drinkers via its provincial campaign to apply stricter controls to alcohol sales. 

Deputy Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Public Health Dr. Supakit Sirilak attended a video conference with members of provincial public health offices around Thailand over the alcohol control guidelines, which were recently approved by the Alcohol Control Committee. 

They are expected to prevent underage people from drinking, carry out a public campaign to promote alcohol-free celebrations on all occasions within their provinces, and provide treatment for alcoholics. 

Under the committee’s guidelines, local public health officers must also report their progress every three months. The Ministry of Public Health wants to discourage new drinkers and get as many as 40% of alcoholics already visiting hospitals to go into rehab, while ensuring that relevant laws are enforced rigorously.

I believe restricting each customer to 1 drink can easily address this.

I would find this new law easy enough to follow and would have no objections. ????

And very often riding to the shop on dad's motorcycle without a crash helmet. I see that regularly.

 

Even my Thai wife agrees that this proposal is unworkable in Thailand's undisciplined society.

I do enjoy reading the press releases from the health ministry here. They always state the obvious and suggest ideas that are just completely unenforceable.

The Ministry of Public Health of Thailand is just so out of touch with reality it is embarrassing. The more they try to stop something, the more people will find ways to get around the controls. Rather than trying to stop drinking, which is a losing battle anyway, they should try educating the youth about the negative aspects of alcohol. Maybe getting support from the younger generation would have a more positive effect than a ban this, ban that attitude, which creates contempt. 

 

This Ministry needs to be run by modern minded people, not the dinosaurs we see who are way out of touch and trying to force their personal ideology on the populace.

Then again, show me a ministry here that actually IS in touch with reality. The Culture Ministry? Nope. The Interior Ministry? Bummer. The Ministry of Finance? You wish. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Yeah, right. The Ministry of Industry and Technology? Oh, my. The Ministry of Silly Walks? Perhaps.

They are very good at there jobs, 100% effective.

What? The laws are already far too rigorous. Can't buy booze between 2pm-5pm, the hours when ALL people crave for a drink. What freaks drinks between 5pm-midnight?

The two students they keep from drinking alcohol with this campaign will be invited by the health ministry to spend a week at a dairy farm. Holy cow!

One more law that nobody will bother enforcing or follow., the Statute Books in Thailand are full of them, starting with the traffic and driving laws.  Then only laws that they seem hell bent on enforcing are those that discourage expats from settling here.  Go figure.

As an old man there are a few things I have realised over my lifetime. One of them is that laws that try to evade nature never succeed in the long term. Young people want to drink and making it illegal to consume, or to buy, alcohol  will never succeed. It will fail for the same reason that drug laws fail. It is adolescent human nature to want to experiment with 'adult' things....they want to drive fast, they want to drink beer, they want to smoke cigarettes or yaba and they want to have sex. Condemning or banning these activities will have no effect but to push the problem underground and young people will pursue these activities  if allowed any freedom at all in their lives. Old people and lawmakers should get over this.

 

Parents, lawmakers and law enforcers need to find a way to channel the passion of young people for what they perceive as 'adventure'. Is it as easy as passing laws banning stuff? No, it is not easy it requires thought, creative ideas and policy making....the very things our lawmakers lack (and are trying to squeeze out of young people in school with there stupid policies).

What is their long term plan, a subservient society, thought they already had that?

No smoking, no drinking the traditional fall backs for the working man, lets him forget what a miserable existence he has, now they want to control that further!

What about bringing in legislation that helps people lead a better quality of life, less pollution, enforce traffic laws, get rid of the "screaming" motorcycles and noisy, underpowered, polluting & noisy trucks! Ah - they have a law - not enforced, not enough money in it!

How about bringing in a law to stop "hate crime" they will decide what a "crime" is though - off course!

Why don't they just become a Muslim state and ban alcohol. They are choking the life out of Thailand.

I cannot personally live in the village as I like the city. But I like to visit the village occasionally. One thing I enjoy is the federal government rules don’t apply. Kids can motorbike to the store and pick up beer or ice or cokes or whatever. Disputes are mainly handled in the community and there is a village head person that usually owns the store and mediate problems. No one bitches about driving a motorbike the quickest route without a helmet or having a party or anything. Alcohol can be sold as long as the elder lady that sells it is awake. I like Thailand and don’t want it to turn into what I left behind where politicians and big government think they should control every detail of our lives. Let it be let it be.

If they were really serious, then just sell alcohol at state-run establishments. If you can't buy it, you can't drink it.
