Phuket Land Transport Office - Driving Licence Renewal

Recommended Posts

Our first, Thai 2 year "temporary" car driving licenses are due to expire in the not too distant future. As we are planning some travel outside of Thailand around that time (we don't need the licenses during the trip), we are wondering what is the "correct" time to renew them for the 5 year licenses; just before; just after (we will be here for a 2-3 days after the expiry), or wait until we return (approx. 6-8 weeks) after expiry.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

For my previous two renewals, I was asked to go after the expiry date of the current license.

Yes, for 5 year renewals that is best, since you get more time. For 2 years it doesn't make much difference, and OP hasn't indicated he will apply for 2 or 5 years license.

Thanks everyone. We are on 1 year extensions based on retirement, so we will be after the 5 year license. Sounds like we need to go just after the expiry of our current 2 year licenses.

If the expiry of your current "temporary license" is your birthday, then applying after it expires will get you nearly 6 years. ????

Only applicable if renewing a 5 year license. And then it is guaranteed the expiry will be your birthday.

Hence the "If".
